Romans 3:22<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

Truth to Learn<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

You can\u2019t earn righteousness, but you can receive it.<\/p>\n

Behind the Words<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The word translated \u201cfaith<\/span>\u201d is the Greek word pistis<\/span><\/em>. This is derived from the verb peith\u014d<\/span><\/em>, which means \u201cto persuade\u201d or \u201cto win over.\u201d Therefore, pistis<\/span><\/em> describes the result of having been won over or persuaded. In other words, it means \u201cfaith, conviction, or belief in a truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

The expression \u201cof God<\/span>\u201d is a translation of the word Theou<\/span><\/em>, which can mean either \u201cof God\u201d or \u201cfrom God.\u201d Hence, we can say that the righteousness that comes by faith belongs to God and He gives it to those who believe.<\/p>\n

\u201cDifference<\/span>\u201d is from the Greek word diastol\u0113<\/span><\/em>, which is derived from the verb diastell\u014d<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto separate\u201d or \u201cto set apart.\u201d Diastol\u0113<\/span><\/em> represents the state after the action. In other words, \u201ca distinct difference.\u201d In 1Corinthians 14:7<\/span><\/strong> this word is used to describe distinctly different sounds of a musical instrument.<\/p>\n

Meaning Explained<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The righteousness needed to stand guiltless before the Judge of the entire world cannot be obtained by obeying a set of rules, no matter how perfect those rules are and no matter how sincere we are or how hard we try. The Old Testament has declared that all of us are sinners. None of us is righteous, no not even one of us; not me, not you, not your pastor, not even the Apostle Paul. I like the way the prophet Isaiah said it:<\/span><\/p>\n

All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.<\/span> (Isaiah 64:6<\/span><\/strong>) NIV Translation<\/em><\/p>\n

In yesterday\u2019s verse Paul introduced a new concept, one that isn\u2019t really new, for it was written about in the Old Testament. Namely, it is possible to obtain the righteousness of God, but it is obtained totally apart from the Law. We can\u2019t become righteous by obeying all the rules or by doing good deeds.<\/span><\/p>\n

This new doctrine of \u201cjustification by faith\u201d is now plainly declared by Paul. There is righteousness apart from the Law, \u201c<\/span>even the righteousness of God,<\/span>\u201d but this righteousness comes \u201cthrough faith in Jesus Christ.<\/span>\u201d That is to say, we can\u2019t earn the righteousness necessary to meet God\u2019s standard of behavior, but we can receive it from God by believing in Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

Paul also tells us that this righteousness by faith is granted to everyone who believes. You don\u2019t have to be born into the right family. You don\u2019t have to be a member of a church. You don\u2019t have to take religion classes. You don\u2019t have to be wealthy. All you have to do is believe.<\/p>\n

We will talk about the last phrase of this verse when we talk about the next verse, with which it rightly belongs.<\/p>\n

Application<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Do you want to stand before the Judge of the earth with the same righteousness as Jesus Christ? You can! And, you don\u2019t have to earn it. You certainly don\u2019t deserve it. Nonetheless, you can have that righteousness, through faith in Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/p>\n
