just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works:<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

Truth to Learn<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

David also talked about those who are blessed due to God\u2019s declaring them righteous without having done good works.<\/p>\n

Behind the Words<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cJust as<\/span>\u201d is translated from kathaper<\/span><\/em>, which is made up of katha<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cas\u201d or \u201cjust as\u201d and per<\/span><\/em>, which is an article indicating abundance. So, we could translate this as \u201cexactly as\u201d or \u201cvery much as.\u201d In other words, Paul is showing a very strong relationship between the example of Abraham\u2019s justification by faith and the things that David said, as quoted in the following verses.<\/p>\n

The word translated \u201cblessedness<\/span>\u201d is makarismos<\/span><\/em>, which refers to someone who has been declared as fortunate, or happy. A very similar word is used in the following two verses where it is translated as \u201cblessed.\u201d Paul is using the word here to describe someone who \u201cpossesses the fullness of God\u2019s favor.\u201d Another way of saying it is \u201cone of God\u2019s favorites.\u201d<\/p>\n

The word \u201cimputes<\/span>\u201d is translated from the Greek word logidzomai<\/span><\/em>, which we looked at back in verse three, meaning \u201cto credit to someone\u2019s account.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cApart from<\/span>\u201d is the translation of the word ch\u014dris<\/span><\/em>, which we looked at in the previous chapter. This word indicates separation of two things in space or time. Therefore, it could be translated here as \u201cseparate from\u201d or \u201cwithout.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meaning Explained<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Paul has already shown that Abraham is an example of God\u2019s crediting righteousness apart from works of the Law. He now cites another example from the Old Testament. <\/span>This time it is a quote from David, who obviously understood that God considers a person righteous without the works of the Law. <\/span>In fact, David declares the person \u201cblessed\u201d to whom God imputes righteousness through faith. It may seem strange to think of God as having favorites, but in a very real sense that\u2019s what David says about those who believe God\u2019s good news.<\/span><\/p>\n

And this favoritism comes, not from works of righteousness, but as a free gift from God. <\/span>It is not granted to us because we have kept a set of rules or followed all the requirements of a particular church or even because we have been obedient. God\u2019s favoritism comes simply because He has chosen to grant it to those who believe.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you believe that you are a sinner in need of salvation and you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay for all of your sins, Paul says because of that faith, God has declared you to be as if you had never committed a single sin. You are declared \u201crighteous\u201d and your name is written in the Book of Life. <\/span>It also means that you will not appear at the Great White Throne Judgment spoken of in Revelation 20:11-15<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span>Instead, you will appear at the Bema Seat Judgment spoken of in 2Corinthians 5:10<\/span><\/strong> where you will receive rewards for those things which you have done for the glory of God.<\/span><\/p>\n

Application<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Because of this gracious truth, let\u2019s commit ourselves to living the remainder of our lives for the sole purpose of glorifying God. It\u2019s the least we can do! <\/span>Don\u2019t you agree?<\/span><\/p>\n
