Romans 5:16<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

And the gift<\/span> is<\/span><\/em> not like<\/span> that which came<\/span><\/em> through the one who sinned. For the judgment<\/span> which came<\/span><\/em> from one<\/span> offense resulted<\/span><\/em> in condemnation, but the free gift<\/span> which came<\/span><\/em> from many offenses<\/span> resulted<\/span><\/em> in justification.<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

God\u2019s free gift of righteousness takes care of all our sins.<\/p>\n

Behind the Words<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The word \u201csinned\u201d is translated from the Greek word hamartan\u014d<\/span><\/em>, which means \u201cto miss the mark.\u201d<\/p>\n

As if making a play on words, in this verse Paul repeatedly uses nouns that end in ma<\/em>. In each cast it indicates the result of an action. These words include:<\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>The word translated \u201cgift\u201d – d\u014dr\u0113ma<\/span><\/em>, derived from the verb d\u014dre\u014d<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto bestow a gift.\u201d Hence, it refers to a gift.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201cJudgment\u201d \u2013 from krima<\/span><\/em>, which is derived from krin\u014d<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto decide\u201d or \u201cto judge.\u201d Whereas, it can refer to a decision of innocence or guilt, it is most often used in relation to a guilty judgment.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>The word translated \u201ccondemnation\u201d \u2013 katakrima<\/span><\/em>. The prefix kata<\/span><\/em> means \u201cdown\u201d or \u201cagainst\u201d and krima<\/span><\/em>, as we just saw, means a judgment. Hence, this word means \u201ca judgment against\u201d or \u201ccondemnation\u201d as we have it in this verse.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201cJustification\u201d \u2013 from diki\u014dma<\/span><\/em>, which is based on the verb dikaio\u014d<\/span><\/em> meaning \u201cto declare righteous\u201d or \u201cto declare innocent.\u201d Hence diki\u014dma<\/span><\/em> refers to the result of the declaration. That is, our righteousness or justification.<\/p>\n

Meaning Explained<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This is a tough verse, so follow closely. It\u2019s the second time Paul is contrasting the effects of the deeds of Adam and Jesus. Previously, he said that death (the consequence of sin) flowed from Adam but that the gift of grace flowed from Jesus.<\/p>\n

A literal word-by-word translation of the first phrase in this verse is, \u201cAnd the gift not like through the one having sinned.\u201d <\/span>Fortunately a couple of words have been added by the translators in order to make the verse more clear. What Paul is saying is that the free gift is not like the one sin of Adam.<\/p>\n

Paul now shows why the one sin is not like the free gift. Here\u2019s what the remainder of this verse says,<\/p>\n

for <\/span>(on the one hand) the judgment is out of one <\/span>(deed) resulting in condemnation, but<\/span> <\/span>(on the other hand) the free gift is out of many transgressions resulting in justification.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Though the grammatical construction is a bit awkward in English, Paul is saying: \u201con the one hand the judgment that came from one deed resulted in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift that handles many transgressions results in justification.\u201d<\/p>\n

If we were to sum up this verse it would be to say that death (the consequence of sin) flowed from one transgression (one sin), but the gift of grace is effective over many transgressions resulting in our justification.<\/p>\n

Application<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Once again, we should be driven to our knees in prayer giving thanks for the gift of the sinless life of Jesus and the gift of grace whereby we will one day stand in the presence of God as righteous saints, not as condemned sinners!<\/p>\n
