Romans 7:13<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful.<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

Truth to Learn<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Law reveals our sinfulness to the fullest extent.<\/p>\n

Behind the Words<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The word translated \u201cappear<\/span>\u201d is phain\u014d<\/span><\/em>, which is from the noun phos<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto shine\u201d or \u201cto make apparent.\u201d Phain\u014d<\/span><\/em> means \u201cto illuminate,\u201d \u201cto become visibly apparent,\u201d or \u201cto reveal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProducing<\/span>\u201d is from katergadzomai<\/span><\/em>, which we saw back in verse eight means, \u201cto carry out a task until it is completely finished.\u201d It is expressed in this verse as a participle, so it could be translated, \u201cis completely accomplishing in me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The word \u201cexceedingly<\/span>\u201d is from huperbol\u0113<\/span><\/em>, which is made up of huper<\/span><\/em> (or hyper), meaning \u201cabove\u201d and a form of ball\u014d<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto throw.\u201d So it literally means \u201cto throw above\u201d or \u201cto throw beyond.\u201d Metaphorically, it means \u201cto surpass\u201d or \u201cto be excessive.\u201d From this we get our English word hyperbole, meaning \u201can extravagant exaggeration.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meaning Explained<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Anticipating another objection, Paul now asks another of his rhetorical questions. The objection is this, \u201cIs it possible that what is admitted to be good and pure (the law), might be changed into evil?\u201d Paul\u2019s response to his rhetorical question is the now familiar, me genoito<\/span><\/em>, that is, \u201cNo way!\u201d<\/p>\n

This next sentence is very confusing to read in most translations. Let me take the liberty of making a couple of minor alterations to the translation so that it might appear to us more clearly what Paul is saying:<\/p>\n

But sin, so that it might be made apparent as sin, is completely accomplishing death in me through that which is good (the law); so that sin might become exceedingly sinful, and this because of the commandment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you see what Paul is saying? The law has not become death to us, but it has caused sin to be revealed as it truly is, very sinful, and it is the sin which causes death.<\/p>\n

There was a comedian some years back by the name of Flip Wilson whose most famous line was, \u201cThe devil made me do it!\u201d Well, if Flip had been around in Paul\u2019s day he probably would have said, \u201cThe Law made me do it!\u201d That is precisely what Paul is arguing against. The law does not make us sin, but it does cause sin to be exposed for what it really is so that we are without any excuse whatsoever.<\/p>\n

So we can\u2019t blame the law for our sinfulness. We have to take full responsibility for our own sin. Then we return to 1 John 1:9<\/span><\/strong>. Do you remember what that verse says?<\/p>\n

Application<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

It is relatively easy for each of us to excuse our own sinfulness for a variety of reasons. But the Law makes our sinfulness so apparent that we no longer have any grounds for denying it. Recognizing and admitting our own sinfulness is the first step in recognizing our need for salvation from the penalty of sin.<\/span><\/p>\n
