{"id":171,"date":"2007-10-14T09:28:13","date_gmt":"2007-10-14T15:28:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ministryofgrace.org\/blog\/?p=171"},"modified":"2007-10-14T09:28:13","modified_gmt":"2007-10-14T15:28:13","slug":"galatians-36-credited-righteousness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ministryofgrace.org\/test\/galatians-36-credited-righteousness\/","title":{"rendered":"Galatians 3:6 &#8211; Credited Righteousness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ministryofgrace.org\/Banner-MOG-60.gif\" alt=\"Ministry of Grace Church\" width=\"472\" height=\"58\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: maroon;\">Galatians 3:6<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"color: navy;\">just as Abraham &#8220;Believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 4pt;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: navy;\"> <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 4pt;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Truth to Learn<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 4pt;\">Our righteousness is not earned, it is credited to us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 4pt;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Behind the Words<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 4pt;\">The word translated \u201c<span style=\"color: navy;\">accounted<\/span>\u201d is a form of \u201c<em><span style=\"color: maroon;\">logidzomai<\/span><\/em>\u201d which is an accounting term meaning, \u201cto credit something to someone\u2019s account.\u201d In the current verse we are told that God credited righteousness to Abraham\u2019s account. In other words, God declared Abraham righteous when he believed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 4pt;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Meaning Explained<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 4pt;\">Paul has been demonstrating to the Christian believers in the churches in Galatia that salvation comes by faith and by faith alone. The false teachers who had been teaching in these churches had convinced the Galatians that they needed to observe at least some of the Law of Moses in order to make their salvation complete. Paul has just pointed out to these believers that God provided His Holy Spirit to them, just as He does with all believers in the church age, by \u201cthe hearing of faith\u201d and not by \u201cworks of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 4pt;\">These false teachers were using the Hebrew Scriptures (what we now call the Old Testament) to demonstrate that circumcision and works of law were necessary for salvation. They may very likely have quoted from Geneses chapter 17 to support their argument.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 4pt 0.25in 0.0001pt;\"><span style=\"color: navy;\">Abraham <span>was<\/span> ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. And Ishmael his son <span>was<\/span> thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. That very same day Abraham was circumcised, and his son Ishmael; and all the men of his house, born in the house or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.<\/span> (<strong><span style=\"color: maroon;\">Genesis 17:24-27<\/span><\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 4pt;\">In response to this Paul will now use another example from the Old Testament to show why works of the law are not necessary. Paul also uses Abraham as his example.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 4pt 0.25in 0.0001pt;\"><span style=\"color: navy;\">Then He <\/span>(God) <span style=\"color: navy;\">brought him <\/span>(Abraham)<span style=\"color: navy;\"> outside and said, &#8220;Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.&#8221; And He <\/span>(God)<span style=\"color: navy;\"> said to him <\/span>(Abraham)<span style=\"color: navy;\">, &#8220;So shall your descendants be.&#8221; And he <\/span>(Abraham) <span style=\"color: navy;\">believed in the LORD, and He <\/span>(God) <span style=\"color: navy;\">accounted it to him <\/span>(Abraham) <span style=\"color: navy;\">for righteousness.<\/span> (<strong><span style=\"color: maroon;\">Genesis 15:5, 6<\/span><\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 4pt;\">When Abraham believed God, God credited it to him for righteousness. The subtlety of argument is the fact that Abraham was declared righteous (<strong><span style=\"color: maroon;\">Genesis 15:6<\/span><\/strong>) some 20 years or so before Abraham was circumcised (<strong><span style=\"color: maroon;\">Genesis 17:24<\/span><\/strong>). God declared Abraham righteous (saved him) based on faith alone without any works just as He declares us righteous based on faith alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Application <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: \">Have you earned the right for God to declare you righteous? No!
