{"id":1863,"date":"2010-07-11T18:01:13","date_gmt":"2010-07-11T23:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ministryofgrace.org\/blog\/?p=1863"},"modified":"2010-07-11T18:01:13","modified_gmt":"2010-07-11T23:01:13","slug":"romans-835-faithful-loving-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ministryofgrace.org\/test\/romans-835-faithful-loving-god\/","title":{"rendered":"Romans 8:35 \u2013 Faithful Loving God"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ministryofgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Banner-MOG-701.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1808\" title=\"Ministry of Grace\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ministryofgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Banner-MOG-701.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"421\" height=\"80\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Romans 8:35 &#8211; Faithful Loving God<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? <span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>Shall<\/em> <\/span>tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Truth to Learn<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No matter what happens to you, remember that God loves you!<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Behind the Words<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">Who<\/span>\u201d is from the Greek interrogative pronoun <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>tis<\/em><\/span>, meaning \u201cwho, which, or what.\u201d In light of the remainder of this verse, I think the best translation here is \u201cwhat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The verb \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">separate<\/span>\u201d is translated from the Greek word <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>ch\u014dridz\u014d<\/em><\/span>, which is based on the adverb <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>ch\u014dris<\/em><\/span>, which means \u201cseparately, by itself, apart from.\u201d Hence, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>ch\u014dridz\u014d<\/em> <\/span>means \u201cto put distance between\u201d or \u201cto make things separate from one another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">Love<\/span>\u201d is from the Greek word <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>agap\u0113<\/em><\/span>, which refers to a self-sacrificing love in which the lover is focused on the ultimate goodness and benefit of the loved one.<\/p>\n<p>Paul now gives us a number of descriptions of things that can\u2019t separate us from the love of Christ. They are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>thlipsis<\/em><\/span>, meaning \u201cpressure, anguish, tribulation, trouble, or affliction.\u201d It refers to troubles pressing from the outside.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>stenoch\u014dria<\/em><\/span>, literally meaning \u201cnarrow space.\u201d It is different from <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>thlipsis<\/em> <\/span>in that it refers to internal distress or \u201canguish.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>di\u014dgmos<\/em><\/span>, which is derived from the verb <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>di\u014dk\u014d<\/em><\/span>, meaning \u201cto relentlessly pursue or persecute.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>limos<\/em> <\/span>refers to \u201ca scarcity of food.\u201d It is most often translated as \u201chunger or famine.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>gumnot\u0113s<\/em><\/span>, meaning \u201cnudity or nakedness.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>kindunos<\/em><\/span>, meaning \u201cperil or danger.\u201d It refers to someone who is constantly moving because of imminent danger.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>machaira<\/em><\/span>, meaning \u201ca sword used for warfare and slaughter.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Meaning Explained<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Paul has already made several declarations about those of us who are the chosen ones of God including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If God is for us, who can possible be against us.<\/li>\n<li>He who gave His Son for our salvation will freely give us all things that we need for life and peace.<\/li>\n<li>No one can get away with charging us with any wrong, and if they do (that is, when Satan does) we have Christ as our defense attorney interceding for us.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now Paul begins the final declaration of this chapter (although it will take several verses to finish the idea). He starts this verse off with, \u201cWhat shall separate us from the love of Christ?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer to this question doesn\u2019t appear until verses thirty-eight and thirty-nine, but a number of candidates are offered by Paul in this verse.
