{"id":2105,"date":"2010-10-19T22:38:24","date_gmt":"2010-10-20T03:38:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ministryofgrace.com\/blog\/?p=2105"},"modified":"2010-10-19T22:38:24","modified_gmt":"2010-10-20T03:38:24","slug":"romans-1020-bold-proclamation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ministryofgrace.org\/test\/romans-1020-bold-proclamation\/","title":{"rendered":"Romans 10:20 &#8211; Bold Proclamation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Ministry of Grace\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ministryofgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Banner-MOG-701.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"421\" height=\"80\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Romans 10:20 <\/strong>&#8211; Bold Proclamation<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>But Isaiah is very bold and says: &#8220;I was found by those who did not seek Me; I was made manifest to those who did not ask for Me.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Truth to Learn<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Be bold in proclaiming the truth!<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Behind the Words<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Greek word translated \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">very bold<\/span>\u201d is <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>apotolma\u014d<\/em><\/span>, which is a compound word made up of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>apo<\/em><\/span>, used as an intensifier and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>tolma<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>\u014d<\/em><\/span>, which means \u201cto be bold, or confident, or daring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">Found<\/span>\u201d is translated from <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>heurisk\u014d<\/em><\/span>, which means \u201cto find or discover, whether by searching or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">seek<\/span>\u201d is from <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>dz\u0113te\u014d<\/em><\/span>, which means \u201cto look for or search for something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">Made manifest<\/span>\u201d is from <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>emphan\u0113s<\/em><\/span>, which is made up of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>en<\/em><\/span>, meaning \u201cin\u201d or \u201cinto\u201d and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>phain\u014d<\/em><\/span>, meaning \u201cto shine\u201d or \u201cto make apparent.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Meaning Explained<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In the previous verse Paul quoted Moses in the book of Deuteronomy as evidence that the Jews should have well known that the Gentiles would come to know God even though they weren\u2019t seeking after God in Moses\u2019 time. Therefore, it should have been obvious to the Christian Jews in Rome that God had indeed turned to the Gentiles after the Jews rejected the Messiah.<\/p>\n<p>Paul now quotes Isaiah to show that he, too, had proclaimed the same message hundreds of years after Moses did. This quotation is from the opening portion of Isaiah chapter 65:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I was sought by<\/span> <span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>those who<\/em><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000080;\">did not ask<\/span> <em><span style=\"color: #808080;\">for Me<\/span>;<\/em> <span style=\"color: #000080;\">I was found by<\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\"> <em>those who<\/em><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000080;\">did not seek Me. I said, \u201cHere I am, here I am,\u201d to a nation <\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>that<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">was <\/span>not called by My name. I have stretched out My hands all day long to a rebellious people, who walk in a way<\/span> <em><span style=\"color: #808080;\">that <\/span>is<\/em> <span style=\"color: #000080;\">not good, according to their own thoughts; a people who provoke Me to anger continually to My face; who sacrifice in gardens, and burn incense on altars of brick; who sit among the graves, and spend the night in the tombs; who eat swine&#8217;s flesh, and the broth of abominable things is <em>in<\/em> their vessels; who say, \u201cKeep to yourself, do not come near me, for I am holier than you!\u201d These<\/span> <em>are<\/em> <span style=\"color: #000080;\">smoke in My nostrils, a fire that burns all the day.<\/span> (<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Isaiah 65:1-5<\/strong><\/span>)<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, this is a scathing rebuke upon the Israelites who would not pay attention to Moses and to those who did not listen to Isaiah. In fact, when Paul introduced this quotation he stated that Isaiah is very bold in saying this. Why was it so daring for him to deliver this message? Remember what he said in <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Isaiah 53:1<\/strong><\/span>? \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">Lord, who has believed our report?<\/span>\u201d It was bold of Isaiah to proclaim this because he knew that his fellow Jews would not believe him and would, in fact, attack him for being so negative to them.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Application<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Doesn\u2019t that sound like many Christians today? If you confront them about their liberal, watered-down theology, their blatant sinfulness, or their legalism, they deny what you say and attack you for not being more forgiving and loving or for not being more \u201cinclusive\u201d in your theology.<\/p>\n<p>I would rather be thought a \u201cfundamental fanatic\u201d when confronting ungodliness than to be well liked because of being willing to compromise on what the Bible says.
