Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel, saying,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Truth to Learn<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>God does not reject or desert any of His children whom He has chosen.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Behind the Words<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The words translated \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">did not cast away<\/span>\u201d are the Greek words <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>ouk ap\u014dsato<\/em><\/span>. The word <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>ouk<\/em> <\/span>is a form of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>ou<\/em><\/span>, which we talked about in the previous verse. It expresses the absolute negative. The word <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>ap\u014dsato<\/em> <\/span>is a form of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>ap\u014dtheomai<\/em><\/span>, which means \u201cto thrust away from oneself, to cast off, or to reject.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">Foreknew<\/span>\u201d is translated from the Greek word <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>proegn\u014d<\/em><\/span>, which we talked about back in <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Romans 8:29<\/strong><\/span>. It is a compound word made up of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>pro<\/em><\/span>, which means \u201cbefore, in place or time\u201d and a form of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>gin\u014dsk\u014d<\/em><\/span>, which means, \u201cto know in a completed sense, that is, to have full knowledge of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">pleads<\/span>\u201d is from <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>entugchan\u014d<\/em><\/span>, which is made up of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>en<\/em><\/span>, meaning \u201cin or by\u201d and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>tugchan\u014d<\/em><\/span>, which properly means \u201cto affect or to obtain.\u201d <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>Entugchan\u014d<\/em><\/span>, therefore, refers to \u201cmeeting with someone for the purpose of obtaining a request.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Meaning Explained<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In the previous verse Paul asked the rhetorical question, \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">Did God put away His people?<\/span>\u201d Then he immediately answered it with the declarative, \u201c<span style=\"color: #000000;\">No way!<\/span>\u201d He is now giving more clarification as to why he said that. He starts off this verse by stating, \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">God did not cast away his people.<\/span>\u201d Paul is saying that God absolutely did not thrust away or reject His people.<\/p>\n<p>The next phrase describes an attribute of God\u2019s chosen people, those whom He did not reject. They are those, \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">whom He foreknew.<\/span>\u201d You may recall that in <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Romans 8:29<\/strong><\/span> Paul said:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">For whom He foreknew, He also predestined<\/span> <span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>to be<\/em><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000080;\">conformed to the image of His Son<em>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In other words, these are the elect, the chosen ones of God. Paul is saying that God did not reject His people whom he foreknew and chose as His children. In fact, God can\u2019t reject those whom He has chosen, which Paul pointed out in the earlier chapters of this book. Next, Paul will quote a passage from Elijah, but since this is so closely tied to the next verse we will cover it there.<\/p>\n<p>The thing I want us to get from the current verse is the fact that God chose some of the Jews to be saved, but not all of them. And even though He will turn from Israel as a nation, He will not turn away from those Israelites whom He has chosen. God does not change! Let me repeat that, God does not change!<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Application<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If God did not reject his chosen ones from the Old Testament dispensation, He is not going to reject those whom He has chosen in the church age. That\u2019s another way of saying, \u201cOnce you are saved, you are saved for good.\u201d That means that no amount of grieving the Spirit or willfully sinning against God is going to cause you to lose your salvation.
