{"id":2205,"date":"2010-12-07T21:43:35","date_gmt":"2010-12-08T03:43:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ministryofgrace.com\/blog\/?p=2205"},"modified":"2010-12-07T21:43:35","modified_gmt":"2010-12-08T03:43:35","slug":"romans-1129-irrevocable-gifts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ministryofgrace.org\/test\/romans-1129-irrevocable-gifts\/","title":{"rendered":"Romans 11:29 &#8211; Irrevocable Gifts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Ministry of Grace\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ministryofgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Banner-MOG-701.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"421\" height=\"80\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Romans 11:29 <\/strong>&#8211; Irrevocable Gifts<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Truth to Learn<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>God\u2019s choosing is final and unchangeable.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Behind the Words<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">Gifts<\/span>\u201d is from <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>charisma<\/em><\/span>, which means \u201ca gift of grace\u201d or \u201can undeserved benefit.\u201d In the New Testament it is used only of such a gift or undeserved benefit received from God.<\/p>\n<p>The word translated \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">irrevocable<\/span>\u201d is the Greek word <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>ametamel\u0113tos<\/em><\/span>, which is made up of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>a<\/em><\/span>, meaning \u201cwithout,\u201d <em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">meta<\/span><\/em>, indicating \u201ca change of place or condition,\u201d and a form of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>mel\u014d<\/em><\/span>, meaning \u201cto be concerned.\u201d When we put this all together we see that <em>ametamel\u0113tos<\/em> means \u201cwithout changing one\u2019s position of concern,\u201d or \u201cwithout changing one\u2019s mind regarding an action taken.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Meaning Explained<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This verse serves as an addendum to the previous verse where Paul said, \u201cConcerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers.\u201d We mentioned the word \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">election<\/span>\u201d in the previous verse as coming from the Greek <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>eklogen<\/em><\/span>, which means \u201cthe act of choosing.\u201d Paul has used various forms of this word several times in this letter to the Jewish Christians in Rome. In each case he is referring to \u201celection unto salvation\u201d whereby God chose who would receive His free gift of grace.<\/p>\n<p>Paul is now expanding on the concept of the \u201celection.\u201d He says, \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">For the gifts \u2026<\/span>\u201d that is, those gifts of grace whereby sinners are chosen to believe the gospel and to be forgiven of their sins. Paul then couples those free gifts with God\u2019s calling, just as he did back in <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Romans 8:28, 29<\/strong> <\/span>where he said:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to<\/span> <span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>His<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\">purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined<\/span> <span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>to be<\/em><\/span> <span style=\"color: #800000;\">conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He now tells us something about this election and its associated calling. They are irrevocable. God does not regret having chosen anyone, and He will not change His mind regarding His selection and calling. So you see Paul is actually saying that this free gift of Grace and the associated irresistible calling of sinners to Himself are done by God without regret and without changing His mind. In other words, once God chooses a sinner to be saved He does not change His mind and revoke that calling unto salvation.<\/p>\n<p>Think about this. Since your salvation is God\u2019s choice and wholly dependent on His actions apart from any action on your part, and since God does not change His mind regarding this choosing, if you are genuinely saved then you cannot become unsaved. It simply can\u2019t happen! You can do nothing to change God\u2019s mind, nothing!<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Application<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Now, instead of focusing so much of your time and effort on trying not to lose your salvation, you can focus all that time and effort on submitting to God and serving Him. You don\u2019t have to worry about losing your salvation. It can\u2019t happen!
