{"id":2501,"date":"2011-05-10T23:12:08","date_gmt":"2011-05-11T04:12:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ministryofgrace.com\/blog\/?p=2501"},"modified":"2011-05-10T23:12:08","modified_gmt":"2011-05-11T04:12:08","slug":"romans-1517-all-gods-doing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ministryofgrace.org\/test\/romans-1517-all-gods-doing\/","title":{"rendered":"Romans 15:17 &#8211; All God&#8217;s Doing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Ministry of Grace\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ministryofgrace.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Banner-MOG-701.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"421\" height=\"80\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Romans 15:17 <\/strong>&#8211; All God&#8217;s Doing<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Therefore I have reason to glory in Christ Jesus in the things <\/strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong><em>which pertain<\/em><\/strong><\/span><strong> to God.<\/strong><\/span><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Truth to Learn<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We should take no credit for our abilities or for what we accomplish; we should give God all the credit.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Behind the Words<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">Glory<\/span>\u201d is translated from the Greek word <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>kauch\u0113sis<\/em><\/span>, which means, \u201cboasting (properly the act; by implication the objective), in a good or a bad sense<em>.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The phrase \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">in the things <span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>which pertain<\/em><\/span> to God<\/span>\u201d is a technical phrase in Jewish liturgical language that refers to the functions of worship performed by a priest.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Meaning Explained<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Paul starts out this verse with, \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">Therefore I have reason to glory in Christ Jesus<\/span>\u201d or as some translations have it, \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">Therefore I have boasting in Christ Jesus.<\/span>\u201d The immediate reaction that many of us have to this is, \u201cBut I thought that boasting and bragging were wrong!\u201d As we see from the Greek word <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>kauch\u0113sis<\/em> <\/span>above, the boasting can be in a good sense or a bad sense. So, let\u2019s look at what the English word \u201cboasting\u201d means. According to <em>The Random House Unabridged Dictionary, Random House, Inc. 2006: <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cboasting &#8211; to speak with pride. It usually refers to a particular ability, possession, etc., that may be one of such kind as to justify a good deal of pride.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, if we are boasting about ourselves, it usually is called bragging, which is an act of personal pride that takes the focus off of God and puts it on to self. This kind of boasting is wrong. Paul\u2019s boasting is not about himself, however. In fact, he says that his boasting is \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">in Christ Jesus,<\/span>\u201d and his boasting is about \u201c<span style=\"color: #000080;\">the things <span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>which pertain<\/em><\/span><strong> <\/strong>to God.<\/span>\u201d Paul is boasting about what God is accomplishing through his ministry of bringing the glorious gospel message to the Gentiles. Paul was not claiming credit for what he was accomplishing; he was giving the credit to God in the person of Jesus Christ!<\/p>\n<p>This might be a good time to ask ourselves, \u201cAm I proud of what I am, or of what I have accomplished?\u201d If so, instead of boasting about what we have accomplished or of what we have become, we need to recognize that everything we are and everything we have are a direct result of the gifts of God, as we see regarding the skills possessed by Bezalel and Aholiab:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And Moses said to the children of Israel, &#8220;See, the LORD has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; \u2026 And He has put in his heart the ability to teach, <span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>in<\/em> <\/span>him and Aholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. He has filled them with skill to do all manner of work of the engraver and the designer and the tapestry maker, in blue, purple, and scarlet <em><span style=\"color: #808080;\">thread<\/span>,<\/em> and fine linen, and of the weaver\u2014those who do every work and those who design artistic works. <\/span>(<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Exodus 35:30, 34-35<\/strong><\/span>)<\/p>\n<p>All Christians have spiritual gifts, skills, and abilities that are given to them by God. We can choose to be proud of what we have or we can choose to humbly use them for His glory.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Application<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Taking personal credit for what God has done is selfish and sinful, but giving glory to (boasting in) God for what He has given us or for what He has accomplished through us is well pleasing to Him.
