far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Jesus\u2019 resurrection is the proof of God\u2019s resurrection promise.<\/p>\n \u201cFar above<\/span>\u201d is translated from the Greek adverb huperan\u014d<\/em><\/span>, which is made up of huper<\/em><\/span>, meaning \u201cabove or over\u201d and an\u014d<\/em><\/span>, meaning \u201cupward\u201d or \u201con top.\u201d Thus, we can see that huperan\u014d<\/em><\/span> means \u201cabove the top\u201d or \u201cfar above.\u201d<\/p>\n Arch\u0113<\/em><\/span> is the Greek word translated \u201cprincipality<\/span>.\u201d The basic meaning of arch\u0113<\/em><\/span> is \u201cbeginning\u201d or \u201ccommencement.\u201d As it is applied to people, it refers to \u201cthe first in a series,\u201d that is, \u201cthe chief\u201d or \u201cthe leader.\u201d<\/p>\n The word translated \u201cpower<\/span>\u201d is exousia<\/em><\/span>, which is based on exesti<\/em><\/span>, meaning \u201cpermissible.\u201d Exousia<\/em><\/span> refers to \u201csomeone who has permission or authority to do something.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMight<\/span>\u201d is from dunamis<\/em><\/span>, which we saw in verse nineteen. It refers to \u201csomeone who has the capability or power to do something.\u201d<\/p>\n The word translated \u201cdominion<\/span>\u201d is kuriot\u0113s<\/em><\/span>. It is based on the noun kurios<\/em><\/span>, meaning \u201clord or master.\u201d Thus, kuriot\u0113s<\/em><\/span> refers to \u201csomeone having lordship or civil authority over others.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAge<\/span>\u201d is translated from ai\u014dn<\/em><\/span>, which properly refers to \u201cduration or continuance of time.\u201d Here it refers to \u201ca long period of time.\u201d Ai\u014dn<\/em><\/span> is sometimes translated as \u201cworld\u201d where it refers to the time that this world exists.<\/p>\n In the past couple of verses, Paul has been talking about God\u2019s power, which has been demonstrated toward those of us who have believed His promises. This power was demonstrated when He resurrected Jesus from the dead, giving eternal life to his resurrected body. As we pointed out in the previous verse, not only has Jesus been raised from the dead, He has been seated (a sign of completion of the Father\u2019s work of resurrection) at the Father\u2019s right hand. This is the seat that declares the most honor and prestige among those who are seated.<\/p>\n But Paul is not finished with his description of the glory and honor of our risen Lord. Not only has He been seated in the position of the most honor, this position is above every created being. Not just above, mind you, but \u201cfar above\u201d them all. Most biblical scholars agree that the words translated \u201cprincipality<\/span>\u201d and \u201cpower<\/span>\u201d are references to angelic beings. Therefore, Paul\u2019s designation of \u201call principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named<\/span>\u201d is a description of every created being, whether human or spirit (angelic). And, it includes not just all beings that have ever been, but any that might exist in the future.<\/p>\n There is no question that Paul has just described the position of highest honor, power, and authority in all of God\u2019s creation. It might seem obvious that the Son of God should have such a position, but this is a description of the man Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n God has demonstrated His awesome power in raising Jesus to the highest position of all to assure you and me that He can, and will, raise us from the dead as well.
