1 Peter 1:4<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

Truth to Learn<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Our inheritance, as born again children of God, is guaranteed for us, and it will never be taken away from us.<\/p>\n

Behind the Words<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The word translated \u201cinheritance<\/span>\u201d is kl\u0113ronomia<\/span><\/em>, which is made up of kl\u0113ros<\/span><\/em>, referring to \u201ca lot\u201d or \u201ca share\u201d and a form of nem\u014d<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto hold\u201d or \u201cto have in one\u2019s power.\u201d It is a reference to being in possession of a share of someone\u2019s estate (in this case, God\u2019s estate).<\/p>\n

\u201cIncorruptible<\/span>\u201d is from the Greek word aphthartos<\/span><\/em>, which is a compound word of the privative a<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cnot\u201d and a form of phtheir\u014d<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto corrupt\u201d or \u201cto destroy\u201d or \u201cto cause to waste away.\u201d Hence, aphthartos<\/span><\/em> refers to \u201csomething that does not waste away and cannot be destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The word translated \u201cundefiled<\/span>\u201d is amiantos<\/span><\/em>, made up of the privative a<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cnot\u201d or \u201cwithout\u201d and a form of miain\u014d<\/span><\/em>, which means \u201cto stain, to pollute, or to defile.\u201d Hence, amiantos<\/span><\/em> refers to \u201cthat which is pure, clean, and unpolluted.\u201d<\/p>\n

The expression \u201cthat does not fade away<\/span>\u201d is translated from amarantos<\/span><\/em>, which is made up of the privative a<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cnot\u201d and a form of marain\u014d<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto extinguish, to go out, to dry up, or to fade away.\u201d Hence it refers to \u201csomething that is perpetual and does not diminish at all with time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meaning Explained<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Ephesians 1:5<\/span><\/strong> our predestination results in our adoption by Jesus Christ himself:<\/p>\n

having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,<\/span><\/p>\n

And, in Ephesians 1:11<\/span><\/strong> Paul says that we\u2019ve received an inheritance from that predestination:<\/p>\n

In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will,<\/span><\/p>\n

Now Peter says that the inheritance which results from our being born again cannot be destroyed, is unpolluted, and does not diminish with time. Like Paul told us in Ephesians 1:14:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We have the Holy Spirit as the guarantee of our inheritance, so Peter now tells us that the inheritance that we already have rights to cannot fade away or diminish. It is eternal!<\/p>\n

Application<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Here in the first 4 verses of 1 Peter we are instructed that not only were we chosen by God to obtain this salvation, but that it is irrevocable and will never disappear (in other words, we can never lose our salvation!)<\/p>\n

No wonder Peter is so full of praise to God. We should be as well!<\/p>\n
