whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see<\/span> Him,<\/span><\/em> yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

Behind the Words<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHaving not seen<\/span>\u201d is translated from the Greek words ouk<\/span><\/em> eidontes<\/span><\/em>. The fist word, ouk<\/span><\/em> is the absolute negative and eidontes<\/span><\/em> is from eid\u014d<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto see with perception.\u201d It is expressed as an aorist participle, meaning \u201cin the past you did not see.\u201d<\/p>\n

The expression \u201cnow you do not see<\/span>\u201d is translated from the words m\u0113<\/span><\/em> or\u014dntes<\/span><\/em>. The word m\u0113<\/span><\/em> is a relative negative and or\u014dntes<\/span><\/em> of a form of the verb hora\u014d<\/span><\/em>, which also means \u201cto see with perception.\u201d Even though this is a different root word from eid\u014d<\/span><\/em>, it is generally used in the present tense where eid\u014d<\/span><\/em> is used for the aorist tense (past, point-in-time action). It is used here as a participle so this could be translated as \u201cyou are not seeing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The word translated \u201cinexpressible<\/span>\u201d is aneklal\u0113tos<\/span><\/em>, a double compound word made up of the privative a<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cnot\u201d or \u201cwithout,\u201d ek<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cout\u201d or \u201cout of,\u201d and a form of lale\u014d<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto speak\u201d or \u201cto utter a sound.\u201d Hence, aneklal\u0113tos<\/span><\/em> refers to something which is \u201cnot utterable,\u201d or inexpressible.<\/p>\n

\u201cFull of glory<\/span>\u201d is the translation of doxadz\u014d<\/span><\/em>. The root of this word is doke\u014d<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto recognize in a favorable manner.\u201d We see then, that doxadz\u014d<\/span><\/em> refers to that favorable recognition, or glory. It is expressed here in the perfect tense, meaning past completed action with an ongoing effect, the emphasis being on the effect. Hence we could translate this word as \u201cglorious,\u201d that is, something which now has ongoing glory.<\/p>\n

Meaning Explained<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Since this epistle is believed to have been written sometime between 58 and 65 AD, some of those reading it would have been alive when Christ was alive. It is unlikely, however, that very many of them, if any, actually saw Jesus. This letter was written to the chosen ones scattered throughout Asia Minor and, therefore, Peter can confidently say that they had not seen him.<\/p>\n

The point that Peter is making is that in spite of the fact that they had not seen Jesus, they loved Him. This same message is clearly given to us today. Though none of us has seen him we still love him. A common expression in the world today is \u201cseeing is believing,\u201d but Peter is saying, in effect, \u201cbelieving is seeing.\u201d The result of this belief, as he has said in several of the previous verses, is that we rejoice with a joy that is both glorious and indescribable. Have you ever tried to explain the joy of salvation to an unbeliever? It\u2019s impossible isn\u2019t it? The joy we have, even in the midst of trials, is difficult for us to explain and impossible for an unbeliever to understand.<\/p>\n

Application<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

We may not be able to see our Savior today, but that doesn\u2019t stop us from believing in Him and in the gift of eternal life through His blood. That salvation should give joy to us all.<\/p>\n

Let us express that joy in our worship and our praise of Him!<\/p>\n
