1 Peter 1:11<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n Truth to Learn<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n We need to search and study to know God\u2019s truths.<\/p>\n Behind the Words<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n The word translated \u201csearching<\/span>\u201d is ereuna\u014d<\/span><\/em>, a less intensive form of the word translated \u201csearched\u201d in the previous verse. It means \u201cto investigate or explore.\u201d<\/p>\n The initial \u201cwhat<\/span>\u201d comes from the Greek expression eis tina<\/span><\/em>, which literally translates to, \u201cunto what,\u201d and may mean either \u201cwhat time,\u201d or \u201cwhat person.\u201d The latter seems to be the correct interpretation.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat manner of time<\/span>\u201d comes from the Greek poion kairon<\/span><\/em>, which refers not to what exact time these things would occur, but to the character or condition of the age when these things would take place.<\/p>\n \u201cTestified beforehand<\/span>\u201d is translated from promarturomai<\/span><\/em>, which is a compound word made up of pro<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cbefore, in place or time\u201d and marturomai<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto witness, testify, or declare.\u201d Hence, this word means \u201cto declare something before it occurs or before it appears.\u201d<\/p>\n The word translated \u201csufferings<\/span>\u201d is the Greek word path\u0113ma<\/span><\/em>, which is derived from pathos<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto experience strong emotion, or suffering.\u201d The ending \u2013ma <\/span><\/em>indicates that it refers to that which is suffered.<\/p>\n Meaning Explained<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n We have already talked about how the prophets looked into their own and each others\u2019 prophecies to better understand this thing called salvation. The current verse gives us particular insight into another thing they looked closely at, namely the Savior Himself. These prophets were inquiring about the person, who He would be, what would be His character, and what would be the nature of the work that He would perform. They were also trying to understand when He would come. That is, they wanted to know what would characterize the time of His coming, in the same way that we want to understand the nature of the time when Christ will return again.<\/p>\n The thing that they were most curious about, however, seems to have been the fact that the Messiah would suffer. That the prophesies taught that the Messiah would suffer was clear, but it was difficult to reconcile the sufferings with the descriptions of His glory and triumphs which would follow.<\/p>\n The most significant thing about these verses is not so much that the prophets believed their messages, but that they constantly studied the scriptures to learn more about the God they served!<\/p>\n Application<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Do you realize how much information God has made available to us in His Word?
