Finally, all<\/span> of you be<\/span><\/em> of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers,<\/span> be<\/span><\/em> tenderhearted,<\/span> be<\/span><\/em> courteous;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

Truth to Learn<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

God has specific expectations regarding how we are to treat each other.<\/p>\n

Behind the Words<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The construction of this verse is very interesting. He says \u201cFinally,\u201d summing up what he has been saying about how we are all to live in relation to one another. This is followed by a series of adjectives. There is no verb present. It is implied as a command \u201cto be.\u201d Thus, the translation \u201cFinally, all of you be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf one mind<\/span>\u201d is from homophr\u014dn<\/span><\/em>, made up of homo<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201call the same\u201d and a form of phr\u0113n<\/span><\/em>, which specifically refers to the feelings, but by extension it refers to \u201cthe mind.\u201d Hence, this means \u201cthe same mind\u201d or \u201cthe same thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

The word translated \u201chaving compassion for one another<\/span>\u201d is sumpatheis<\/span><\/em>, from which we get out English word \u201csympathy.\u201d It is made up of sun<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201ctogether\u201d and a form of pathos<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cstrong feelings, either good or bad.\u201d Hence, it literally means \u201cfeeling joys and sorrows with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next word is philadelphos<\/span><\/em>, which is made up of a form of philos<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cfriend\u201d and adelphos<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cbrother.\u201d Hence, it refers to being \u201cbrother friendly.\u201d The noun form of this word is often translated as \u201cbrotherly love.\u201d<\/p>\n

The word translated \u201ctenderhearted<\/span>\u201d is eusplangchnos<\/span><\/em>, which is made up of eu<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cwell\u201d and splangchnos<\/span><\/em>, which literally refers to \u201cthe intestines.\u201d This may seem strange to us, but in the first century it was believed that emotional feelings came from the intestines. Hence this word refers to \u201cgood emotions\u201d toward one another.<\/p>\n

\u201cCourteous<\/span>\u201d is translated from tapeinophrones<\/span><\/em>, made up of tapeinos<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201clow, particularly in attitude or social position\u201d and a form of phr\u0113n<\/span><\/em>, referring to the mind. So this word literally means \u201chumble minded.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meaning Explained<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Peter now summarizes how we all are to behave in this life. A few verses back Peter said that Christ was our example of how we ought to suffer patiently when we suffer for doing good. He is, in fact, our ultimate example of living. Think of how Christ lived his life here on earth as you read this translation of today\u2019s verse concerning how we are to live our lives:<\/p>\n

And in conclusion, all of you be agreeable, be sympathetic, be a friend to your brothers, be compassionate, be humble minded<\/span>.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

The world will not treat you this way! In fact, if you behave this way you will probably suffer for it. Will you suffer patiently?<\/p>\n

Whether He was a baby in a manger, a teacher, a healer or a savior on the cross, Jesus was always\u2026 agreeable, sympathetic, brotherly friendly, compassionate, and humble<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
