Truth to Learn<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The proper response when someone insults you is to bless them.<\/p>\n

Behind the Words<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The word translated \u201creturning<\/span>\u201d is the Greek word, apodidantes<\/span><\/em>,<\/span> which means \u201cto give away\u201d or, as in this case, \u201cto give back.\u201d The notion is that it is not self-initiated action but reaction.<\/p>\n

The word \u201cevil\u201d is from kakos<\/span><\/em>, which means \u201cworthless, bad, or evil.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cReviling<\/span>\u201d is translated from loidoria<\/span><\/em>, which refers to \u201cinsulting language or verbal abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n

The expression \u201con the contrary<\/span>\u201d is from the Greek word tounantion<\/span><\/em>, which literally means \u201cthe opposite.\u201d<\/p>\n

The word translated \u201cblessing<\/span>\u201d comes from our old friend, eulogeo<\/span><\/em>, which literally means \u201cgood words.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cInherit<\/span>\u201d is translated from the verb kl\u0113ronome\u014d<\/span><\/em>, which is made up of kl\u0113ros<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201ca lot\u201d or \u201ca portion\u201d and nem\u014d<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto hold\u201d or \u201cto distribute.\u201d kl\u0113ronome\u014d<\/span><\/em> refers to the distribution of an inheritance to those who rightfully deserve it.<\/p>\n

Meaning Explained<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

After telling us how we should behave, Peter now tells us how we shouldn\u2019t behave. Few of us go around looking for people we can do bad things to or people we can cast a vicious insult at. On the other hand, how quickly we seem to react to the pain inflicted by others with a little pain infliction of our own. How effortlessly we can deliver a quick and powerful (and stinging) response to others when we are simply defending ourselves.<\/p>\n

However, Peter says we should do just the opposite. We should respond with a blessing when we are insulted or when someone does something bad to us. We should eulogize them, we should respond with kind words (Yeah, right! That\u2019s what I<\/strong> want to do when someone slams me!) The point is, the action we should take is not what we want to do, it\u2019s what God tells us to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy should I say something nice to someone who just did something bad to me?\u201d you may ask. Peter says, in effect, that this is our purpose in life. Unto this we were called. Here\u2019s what the Apostle Paul said to the Christians in Rome:<\/p>\n

But whom He predestinated, these He also called; and whom He called, those He also justified. And whom He justified, these He also glorified. <\/span>(Romans 8:39<\/span><\/strong>)<\/p>\n

Because God chose us and called us, He also declared us as just, or righteous, and in God\u2019s mind at least, He has already glorified us. Because of this calling, however, we are also expected to behave in a certain manner. We were called to inherit a blessing, that is, justification, glorification, and salvation! Therefore, we certainly should, in light of what God has already done for us and in light of what He is going to do for us, return a blessing on those who do bad things to us.<\/p>\n

Application<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The next time someone does something bad to you or insults you try saying something nice to them in return. You may be surprised by what happens!<\/p>\n
