1 Peter 3:11<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it.<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n Truth to Learn<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Peter commands us to turn completely away from evil, doing good instead. He also admonishes us to pursue peace with a vengeance.<\/p>\n Behind the Words<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n The words \u201cturn away<\/span>\u201d are from ekklin\u014d<\/span><\/em>, which is made up of ek<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cout\u201d and klin\u014d<\/span><\/em> meaning \u201cturn aside\u201d or \u201cturn away.\u201d If Peter had used klin\u014d<\/span><\/em> by itself it would indicate turning away from something but ekklin\u014d<\/span><\/em> implies turning completely out of the way of it. It is a picture of one who is walking down a path and they turn completely off the path.<\/p>\n In the Greek text this is followed by the preposition apo<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cfrom\u201d or \u201caway from.\u201d The repetition serves to emphasize that we are to completely turn off the path of evil and move completely away from it. To add even more emphasis to the statement, Peter uses the imperative mood of ekklin\u014d<\/span><\/em>, implying a command, not a suggestion. Hence, we could translate the first part of this verse as, \u201cHe must turn completely away from evil \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n The words translated as \u201cevil<\/span>\u201d and \u201cgood<\/span>\u201d are kakos<\/span><\/em> and agathos<\/span><\/em> which are polar opposites, the first meaning general badness or worthlessness and the second meaning general goodness.<\/p>\n \u201cSeek<\/span>\u201d is translated from the Greek word dz\u0113te\u014d<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto look for\u201d or \u201cto try to find.\u201d This verb is also expressed in the imperative mood, indicating a command.<\/p>\n The word translated \u201cpursue<\/span>\u201d is di\u014dk\u014d<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto pursue\u201d or \u201cto persecute.\u201d It implies much more than simply looking for something. It indicates determination and tenacity. This verb, like the others in this verse, is in the imperative mood.<\/p>\n Meaning Explained<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n In the previous verse we were told,<\/p>\n For he that wants to love life and to see good days, let him restrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking guile.<\/span><\/p>\n This verse is a continuation of that thought. If you have determined to love life and to see good days then not only must you be very careful about what you say and how you say it, you must do several other things as well.<\/p>\n Before we get to those things, though, let\u2019s look at the expression, \u201cLet him \u2026\u201d On the surface it appears that Peter is saying, \u201callow him \u2026\u201d but that is not what he is saying. In fact, in English the use of the word \u201clet,\u201d when used with verbs, is an expression of the imperative, or command, form of the Greek verb. So \u201cLet him \u2026\u201d doesn\u2019t mean \u201cAllow him \u2026\u201d, rather it means \u201cIt is imperative for him to \u2026\u201d or \u201cHe must \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n If we have determined to love life and to see good days then we must control our language and we must turn completely away from evil. In their place we must do good and, not only seek peace, but pursue it diligently.<\/p>\n Application<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n It\u2019s easy to talk about doing good and it\u2019s easy to talk about peace.
