1 Peter 4:2<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n that he no longer should live the rest of<\/span> his<\/span><\/em> time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n Truth to Learn<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n He suffered and died for us, let us suffer and live for Him.<\/p>\n Behind the Words<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n In the previous verse Peter told us to \u201carm<\/span>\u201d ourselves with the same \u201cmind.\u201d Let\u2019s look at these two words. \u201cArm<\/span>\u201d is translated from the Greek word hoplidz\u014d<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto equip with armament.\u201d It is expressed in the imperative mood indicating a command. The implication of the verb is that we should start doing so right now.<\/p>\n The word translated \u201cmind<\/span>\u201d is ennoia<\/span><\/em>, which is a compound word made up of en<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cin\u201d and nous<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cthe mind.\u201d Therefore this word means \u201cthat which is in the mind,\u201d hence, \u201cthoughts\u201d or \u201cunderstanding.\u201d<\/p>\n In today\u2019s verse, the words \u201cno longer<\/span>\u201d are from the Greek word m\u0113keti<\/span><\/em>, made up of m\u0113<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cnot\u201d and eti<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201canymore\u201d or \u201cyet.\u201d Hence, it means \u201cnot anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cFlesh<\/span>\u201d is translated from the Greek word sarx<\/span><\/em>, which refers to \u201cthe flesh of a living creature.\u201d Hence, Peter is referring to the remainder of time that we are living on this earth.<\/p>\n The word \u201clusts<\/span>\u201d is one that we have seen before. It is translated from the Greek epithumia<\/span><\/em>, which is made up of epi<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cover\u201d and a form of thumos<\/span><\/em>, which refers to \u201ca violent motion or passion of the mind.\u201d Hence, epithumia<\/span><\/em> refers to \u201can overly strong desire of the mind.\u201d<\/p>\n Meaning Explained<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n In the previous verse Peter told us, \u201che who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin.<\/span>\u201d This doesn\u2019t mean that we will never commit a sin again. Rather, Peter is telling us that when we are suffering, though we have done nothing wrong, and we are doing so patiently, we are not letting our sin nature control us.<\/p>\n In the current verse, Peter completes that thought. Since we have the same understanding as Christ, that this suffering is God\u2019s will, then we should:<\/p>\n live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.<\/span><\/p>\n In other words, for the remainder of the time that we are living our earthly life, we should not be living for the lusts of men but for the will of God. Well, what are these lusts of men? According to the Apostle John they are:<\/p>\n <\/span>the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life <\/span>(1 John 2:16<\/span><\/strong>)<\/p>\n So it\u2019s not just sexual lust we are talking about, but all those desires that we have that cause us to focus on ourselves rather than God. It includes the overly strong desire for food, for pleasure, for \u201cstuff\u201d like a new car or a new house, or a new kitchen, or a new boat, or the desire to be admired because of a position of prominence. It\u2019s anything that focuses on \u201cme.\u201d<\/p>\n Application<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Let us not waste our few remaining years on this earth satisfying ourselves, that is, our fleshly lusts. Let us, instead, seek out ways to be obedient to the will of God so as to bring Him glory!
