1 Peter 5:7<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n Truth to Learn<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n God is interested in our well being, so why are we worrying?<\/p>\n Behind the Words<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n The word \u201ccasting<\/span>\u201d is translated from the Greek word epirrhipt\u014d<\/span><\/em>, which is a compound of epi<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201con or upon\u201d and rhipt\u014d<\/span><\/em>, which means \u201cto fling or toss\u201d (not a hard throw like a \u201churl\u201d but a gentle toss). So this word means to \u201ctoss something on\u201d like you would toss a small stick on a campfire. This word is expressed as an aorist participle, indicating an action done once and for all.<\/p>\n \u201cAll<\/span>\u201d is translated from a form of pas<\/span><\/em>, which means \u201call.\u201d However, this word does not mean all as in \u201call of them,\u201d but all as in \u201cthe whole.\u201d It\u2019s a subtle but distinct difference meaning that we are to cast all of our ability to worry on Him.<\/p>\n The word translated \u201ccare<\/span>\u201d is the Greek word merimna<\/span><\/em>, which means \u201cconcern or worry.\u201d It is derived from meris<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201csomething divided\u201d or \u201ca piece.\u201d The implication is that it refers to anything that divides our attention from God.<\/p>\n The words \u201ccares for<\/span>\u201d are translated from the Greek verb melei<\/span><\/em>, which means \u201cto be of interest to\u201d or \u201cto take care of.\u201d This word is expressed in the present tense, active voice, and indicative mood implying current continuous action.<\/p>\n Now, if we tie this all together with the previous verse, we get:<\/p>\n Therefore, be humbled under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you in time, tossing all your worrying onto Him, because He is taking care of you.<\/span><\/p>\n Meaning Explained<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n We are often quick to ask God for help with the things that worry us. But like so many other areas of our lives, we want Him to take care of them while we continue to hold on firmly. I like the idea of \u201ctossing\u201d all of our worrying on Him because it requires a release on our part. If we simply hand it to Him, we can still hold on and \u201chelp God\u201d with it. Tossing it requires that we let go.<\/p>\n \u201cBut what if He doesn\u2019t do anything about it?\u201d you may ask. That\u2019s where faith comes in. If we truly believe that nothing is impossible with God and that He loves us with an agape-type love and is truly concerned for our well being, then He will do what is ultimately best for us and what brings the most glory to Himself. That may mean that we have to suffer regarding those very things we have been worrying about. This is the very notion of suffering for righteousness\u2019 sake that Peter has been talking about throughout this entire letter. But let it be God\u2019s choice, not ours.<\/p>\n The bottom line is that we must allow ourselves to be used by God in the manner that He decides is best. That takes faith \u2026 That means allowing ourselves to be humbled \u2026 That means a complete commitment to God and His will.<\/p>\n Application\/Challenge<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n I know a person who worries so much that she gets worried when she realizes that she doesn\u2019t currently have anything to worry about. That\u2019s not living by faith. That\u2019s not allowing oneself to be humbled before God.
