Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law.<strong><o:p><\/o:p><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\"><span><span><strong><u><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Truth to Learn<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\"><span><span>The Law of Moses is not contrary to the promises of God, but it is still not possible to obtain righteousness by obeying the Law.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\"><strong><u><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Behind the Words<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\"><span><span>The expression \u201c<em><span style=\"color: navy\">Certainly not!<\/span><\/em>\u201d that Paul uses in this verse is one which he uses frequently in answer to rhetorical questions.<span>  <\/span>It is translated from the Greek, \u201c<em><span style=\"color: maroon\">m\u0113 genoito<\/span><\/em>\u201d which could very easily be translated into our vernacular as, \u201c<em>No way!<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\"><span><span><strong><u><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Meaning Explained<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\"><span><span>Paul has presented a very strong case as to why salvation is not dependent on fulfilling any part of the requirements of the Law of Moses.<span>  <\/span>This has been his objective since the beginning of this letter to the Galatian Christians; however, many of the converts throughout <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Galatia<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, like many in the first century church as a whole, were converts from Judaism.<span>  <\/span>They grew up being taught that God required all Jews to obey the Law.<span>  <\/span>It would be difficult, if not impossible, for these Jewish converts to think that the Law which they grew up with is contrary to the faith that they now hold.<span>  <\/span>So, in anticipation of their objection, Paul now presents the question that they would likely pose so that he can answer it: \u201c<em><span style=\"color: navy\">Is the Law of Moses contrary to God\u2019s promises through faith?<\/span><\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\"><span><span>He answers his own question with a very familiar expression of his: \u201c<em><span style=\"color: navy\">No way!<\/span><\/em>\u201d<span>  <\/span>The Law of Moses is as good as a law can be.<span>  <\/span>It is good, and pure, and true, but it is not capable of giving eternal life because no man (except the incarnate Son of God) can be justified by perfect obedience to it.<span>  <\/span>The Law of Moses was as well adapted to justification by obedience as a law could be.<span>  <\/span>Its demands are as just and its terms as favorable as any of the terms of mere law could be.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\"><span><span>Because we have a sin nature, we will all break at least some part of the law.<span>  <\/span>And, as James told us:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0.25in 0.0001pt\"><span><span><strong><span style=\"color: maroon\">James 2:10<\/span><\/strong><span>  <\/span><strong><sup><span style=\"color: red\">10<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><em><span style=\"color: navy\">For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one <span>point,<\/span> he is guilty of all.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\"><span><span>Therefore, no one can be justified by the Law of Moses.<span>  <\/span>The fact that no one can be justified by the pure law revealed on <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Mount Sinai<\/st1:place> forever settles the question about the possibility of being justified by any law or set of rules.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\"><span><span><strong><u><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">So What? <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\"><span><span>The Law of Moses, presented to the children of <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Israel<\/st1:country-region> on <st1:place w:st=\"on\">Mount Sinai<\/st1:place> detailing how we should live with one another and how we should behave before our God, is the best set of guidelines ever given to man.<span>  <\/span>Obeying these guidelines, or any other set of rules and regulations, cannot make a person righteous in God\u2019s eyes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\"><span><span>The only ones who can stand in the presence of God Almighty are those whom God Himself has declared righteous, and that only happens by faith.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>In God\u2019s service, for His glory,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ministryofgrace.org\/signature.gif\" alt=\"signature\" height=\"35\" width=\"63\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: NuptialScript\">Copyright \u00a9 2007<span>  <\/span>Will<span>  <\/span>Krause.
