{"id":80,"date":"2008-02-14T21:10:57","date_gmt":"2008-02-15T03:10:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ministryofgrace.org\/blog\/index.php\/2008\/02\/14\/galatians-519-thoughts-in-action\/"},"modified":"2008-02-14T21:10:57","modified_gmt":"2008-02-15T03:10:57","slug":"galatians-519-thoughts-in-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ministryofgrace.org\/test\/galatians-519-thoughts-in-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Galatians 5:19 &#8211; Thoughts in Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/Banner-MOG-60.gif\" alt=\"Ministry of Grace Church\" height=\"58\" width=\"472\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<p class=\"Section1\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: maroon\">Galatians 5:19<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"color: navy\">Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0.25in\"><strong><u><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Truth to Learn<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The evil thoughts of our sin nature become sinful actions, whereas the act of submitting to God becomes precious fruit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 3pt\"><strong><u><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Behind the Words<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<span style=\"color: navy\">Works<\/span>\u201d is translated from <em><span style=\"color: maroon\">ergon<\/span><\/em>, which refers to \u201cwork\u201d or \u201clabor.\u201d By implication it refers to \u201can act or deed.\u201d In science a unit of measure for work done is the \u201cerg\u201d which is derived from this Greek word.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\">The word \u201c<span style=\"color: navy\">evident<\/span>\u201d is translated from <em><span style=\"color: maroon\">phaneros<\/span><\/em>, an adjective taken from the verb <em><span style=\"color: maroon\">phain\u014d<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto shine.\u201d So, <em><span style=\"color: maroon\">phaneros<\/span><\/em> refers to that which can be easily seen, hence \u201cevident\u201d or \u201capparent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\">The Greek word <em><span style=\"color: maroon\">moicheia<\/span><\/em>, meaning sex between a married person and someone who is not their spouse, is appropriately translated here as \u201c<span style=\"color: navy\">adultery<\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\">\u201c<span style=\"color: navy\">Fornication<\/span>\u201d is the translation of <em><span style=\"color: maroon\">porneia<\/span><\/em>, from which we get our English word pornography. It refers to sexual acts between any two people who are not married. Hence, it includes adultery, homosexuality, pre-marital sex, incest, and what today is referred to as casual sex.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\">The word \u201c<span style=\"color: navy\">uncleanness<\/span>\u201d comes from the Greek word <em><span style=\"color: maroon\">akatharsia<\/span><\/em>, a compound word made up of <em><span style=\"color: maroon\">a<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cnot\u201d and a form of <em><span style=\"color: maroon\">kathair\u014d<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto cleanse\u201d or \u201cto heal.\u201d This word is used to refer to either physical or moral uncleanness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\">Finally, \u201c<span style=\"color: navy\">lewdness<\/span>\u201d is translated from <em><span style=\"color: maroon\">aselgia<\/span><\/em>, made up of <em><span style=\"color: maroon\">a<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cnot\u201d and an obscure word <em><span style=\"color: maroon\">selg\u0113s<\/span><\/em>, apparently meaning \u201cself-control.\u201d Given that it is included here is a list of obviously sexually oriented terms, it most likely refers to uncontrolled, overtly sexual behavior or activity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 3pt; page-break-after: avoid\"><strong><u><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Meaning Explained<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In verse seventeen Paul explained that our sin nature (our flesh) is in constant opposition to the Spirit of God within us. He is now giving examples of both the things which come from our flesh and the things which come from the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\">Notice the contrast between this list and the list in verses twenty-two and twenty-three. These are \u201cworks\u201d or actions which are the result of selfish desires. They start out as thoughts and end up as actions. These works of the flesh come from the thoughts or inclinations of our heart which are evil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 6pt 0.25in 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"color: navy\">Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man<\/span> <em><span style=\"color: gray\">was<\/span><\/em> <span style=\"color: navy\">great in the earth, and<\/span> <em><span style=\"color: gray\">that<\/span><\/em> <span style=\"color: navy\">every intent of the thoughts of his heart<\/span> <em><span style=\"color: gray\">was<\/span><\/em> <span style=\"color: navy\">only evil continually. (<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: maroon\">Genesis 6:5<\/span><\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\">When these thoughts or inclinations are put into action it demonstrates how self-centered and ungodly we all are.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt\">The list in verses twenty-two and twenty-three, on the other hand, are \u201cthe fruit\u201d developed over time from submitting to the leading of God through His Spirit. They start out as an action of submission and end up as an attitude of our heart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 3pt\"><strong><u><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Application <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBut,\u201d you say, \u201cI\u2019ve never done any of these things!\u201d Perhaps that\u2019s true, but by the time Paul completes the list there won\u2019t be a single one of us who can say we\u2019ve never thought about or committed any of these acts.
