For if you do these things, you will never fall,<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n Truth to Learn<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n If you are truly saved, then you are completely saved, forever!<\/p>\n Behind the Words<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cTherefore<\/span>\u201d is translated from dio<\/span><\/em>, which means \u201cfor which, wherefore, or therefore.\u201d<\/p>\n The word \u201ceager<\/span>\u201d is translated from the Greek verb spoudadz\u014d<\/span><\/em>, which comes from the same root as one of the words we looked at in verse five, spoude<\/span><\/em>.<\/span> It refers to \u201cspeed, earnestness, diligence, or zeal.\u201d It is used here in the imperative mood, indicating a command. In the context of the past few verses, this should probably be translated \u201cdiligent\u201d or \u201czealous.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cCalling<\/span>\u201d is from the Greek kl\u0113sis<\/span><\/em>, which refers to \u201can invitation.\u201d And the word \u201celection\u201d is from the Greek <\/span>eklog\u0113<\/span><\/em>, which comes from ekleg\u014d<\/span><\/em> (to choose), referring to something that was \u201cchosen\u201d or \u201cselected.\u201d<\/p>\n The word \u201csure<\/span>\u201d is from \u201cbebaios<\/span><\/em>,\u201d meaning \u201cfixed\u201d or \u201cfirm.\u201d Figuratively, this word refers to the foundation upon which something is built. Literally, we could translate this word as \u201cfoundational,\u201d meaning that which is sure, firm, secure, and upon which other things can be built.<\/p>\n The expression \u201cyou will never fall<\/span>\u201d is translated from ou me ptais\u0113te pote<\/span><\/em>, which literally means, \u201cno not fall ever.\u201d The double negative, although improper in English, is a way of emphasizing the point in Greek. We could translate this as \u201cyou will in no way fall, ever!\u201d<\/p>\n Meaning Explained<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Peter has been talking about the character qualities that all Christians need to develop in order to be mature, and he spoke in verse nine about the consequences of not diligently pursuing these qualities. Those who don\u2019t work hard at developing these qualities actually become less Christ-like and become blinded, unable to see the truth, and they become forgetful of the work done to wipe out the consequences of their sins. Therefore<\/strong>, says Peter, work even harder at developing these Christian characteristics.<\/p>\n When Peter says to \u201cmake your calling and election sure<\/span>\u201d he is not saying \u201cto eliminate doubt\u201d about them. He is not questioning the doctrine of election; rather he is affirming it by saying that we are to be diligent in demonstrating the firmness of our calling and election. The word \u201cif\u201d is not in the original Greek. Literally he says, \u201cfor doing these things there is no way you would fall, ever!\u201d<\/p>\n There has been much debate about what he means that there is no way we would ever fall. But if we look at the next verse we see that he is talking about our entrance into the everlasting kingdom. In other words, Peter is telling us that as we build on the sure foundation of our salvation, which was made sure by our calling and election, then we will absolutely never lose our salvation, ever!<\/p>\n Application<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Perhaps you have been taught that if you commit certain kinds of sins you will lose your salvation.
