1 Thessalonians 5:15 – Do Good, Not Evil

See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for one another and for all.

Behind the Words

The word translated “renders” is apodidōmi, which is composed of apo, meaning “from” or “away from” and didōmi, meaning “to give.” Literally, it means “to give from,” that is, to act in response to action done. Specifically, it refers to retaliation. Some translations have this as “return” or “repay.”

Kakos is the Greek word translated “evil.” This word refers to external actions that are “worthless, bad, or evil.” A different Greek word, ponēros, refers to wickedness or maliciousness as an internal motivation.

“For” is translated from anti, meaning “opposite” or “against.” Here it indicates action directed against someone else.

“Always” is from pantote, which is made up of a form of pas, meaning “all” and tote, meaning “then, in terms of time.” Thus, pantote means “all the time” or “always.”

The word “pursue” is from the verb diokō, which means “to pursue (in a good sense” or “to persecute (in a bad sense).”

Agathos is the word translated “good.” It refers to the quality or characteristic of goodness or usefulness.

 

Meaning Explained

In yesterday’s verse, Paul taught us how we are to respond to certain issues within the church. We need to caution those who are unruly or disruptive, reminding them of the need for peace and orderly conduct in the church. We also need to provide comfort and encouragement for those who are overcome with fear and doubt. And, we need to support those who are weak physically, emotionally, and spiritually. He also said that we are to do these things with an attitude of patience.

Now he tells us what not to do, and what to do instead. Each one of us at one time or another has been the recipient of malicious action, whether it was intentional or not. The normal response, driven by our sin nature, is to strike back – to get even. After all, the Old Testament teaches “an eye for an eye,” right? But that’s not what the New Testament teaches. Paul says, “Don’t repay evil for evil.” Instead of retaliating for something evil that was done to us, Paul says we need to go after what is good.

Jesus Christ is our perfect example of this. He claimed to be the Son of God (which He truly is), thus claiming to be equal with God. (Matthew 26:63, 64) Because of this, He was condemned to die. He was then ridiculed, beaten, and hung on a cross to die. Even those standing around him said, “If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” (Matthew 27:40) Jesus did not deserve any of this kind of treatment, and He could have simply spoken the words and those mocking Him would have died. Instead, he chose to do what was ultimately the kindest, most loving thing anyone has ever done. He stayed on the cross and gave His life as payment for your sins and mine. He did what was good for all.

 

Application

The next time someone does something evil to you, remember what Jesus did for you. Remember what Paul teaches us: pursue what is good for all. This will glorify God.

Ephesians 5:31 – Glued Together as One

"For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh."

God has a specific design for the marriage relationship.

Behind the Words

The words “For this reason” are translated from the Greek words anti toutou. The word anti means “opposite” or “against” and toutou (a form of houtos) means “this.” So, this expression literally means “against this,” or “answering to this.”

The verb “leave” is from the Greek verb kataleipō, made up of kata, meaning “down” but used as an intensifier and leipō, meaning “to leave” or “to be without.” Hence, the meaning of kataleipō is “to completely leave behind” or “to forsake.”

Joined” is translated from proskollaō, which is composed of pros, meaning “to” or “toward” and kollaō, meaning “to glue.” So, we can see that this word means “to glue one thing to another.”

The words “shall become” are translated from esontai eis. Esontai is the verb of being meaning “they shall be” and eis is a preposition meaning “unto” or “into.” Hence, these two words literally mean “shall be unto” or “shall become.”

Meaning Explained

Today’s verse is a quotation from Genesis. This particular verse comes immediately after Adam had awakened from his deep sleep during which God had removed one of his ribs to make the woman (Eve) for him. Upon awakening Adam said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man” (Genesis 2:23). The very next verse is:

Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. (Genesis 2:24)

These are not the words of Adam, for he did not have an earthly mother or father and he had not yet experienced fatherhood. These are the words of Moses as he is narrating the story. Moses’ point is, as Adam and Eve were literally made of the same flesh, so too, any married couple separate from their parents and become “as one” when they are married.

Now, we know that a man and a woman don’t literally come to share the same DNA after they get married. However, they do produce offspring that is literally a union (a gluing together) of the DNA of both parents.  Also note that the marriage of a man and a woman brings them into such intimacy both physically and emotionally that they become glued together in purpose, thought, and will. Just as Adam was alone and not complete until God provided a woman for him, so too a man and a woman today are not complete until they are united in marriage.

As we will see in the next verse, Paul is not just talking about the physical union of a man and his wife, he is also talking about the spiritual union between Christ and His bride.  

Application

Clearly, God’s plan for mankind involves a deep emotional and physical gluing together of one man and one woman in marriage. Any other arrangement is counter to the image of Christ and His bride, the church.

Romans 9:19 – No Fault Sovereignty

You will say to me then, “Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?”

It is completely fair for God to do as He decides.

Behind the Words

The Greek verb translated “find fault”  is memphomai, meaning “to find fault, to blame, or to censure.”

Resisted” is translated from anthistēmi. This is a compound word made up of anti, meaning “against” and histēmi, meaning “to stand.” So, quite literally, this word means “to stand against.” Understand, however, that the emphasis of this word is on the result rather than the process. In its usage here, Paul is not saying, “who has put up a fight against God’s will” but “who has prevailed against His will.”

Will” is from boulēma. This is the noun form of boulomai, which we compared with thelō back in verse sixteen. It refers to “intention or purpose.”

Meaning Explained

Paul has been very methodically and meticulously describing God’s sovereignty in choosing some and not choosing others. Every Jew knows that God chose Abraham and called him out of Ur of the Chaldeans. From there Paul showed that Isaac was the chosen son of promise rather than Ishmael, the first born of his flesh. He then gives the example of Jacob and Esau. Even though Esau was the first born, God said “Jacob have I loved but Esau have I hated.” And He did so without taking into account anything either of them did in their lives.

His next example is Pharaoh. Pharaoh had a hardened heart toward God and His chosen people as a result of his sin nature (which we all have). But God hardened Pharaoh’s heart even further so that He (God) might receive praise and glory. Thus Paul declares

He has mercy on whom He wills, and whom He wills He hardens.

From our human perspective we look at this and say, “That’s not fair!” This is the first objection most people have to God’s sovereignty. Paul now gets to the other objection. If God is in total control and no one can resist His will in election, then why does he condemn sinners? Why doesn’t He just forgive everyone their sins and not send anyone to Hell for being a sinner?

Actually, this is just another way of saying, “That’s not fair! God shouldn’t choose some to go to Heaven and allow others to go to Hell.” Paul will address this in his response in the next verse. So as not to take all the wind out of his sails, let me simply state that the problem with this objection is that it assumes that we know better than God. But, how can we who are finite beings with a sin nature ever suppose that we know better than an infinite, loving, holy, righteous God.

Application

We have no right to criticize God for the way He chooses to run His creation. Instead of complaining and fighting His will for us, we need to better understand Him and His will for us. As we do, we will fall on our knees asking for forgiveness for even questioning His will and His sovereignty.
