Romans 14:19 – Self Denial

Therefore we should pursue the things of peace and the things by which we build up one another.

Truth to Learn

We must deny ourselves in order to serve God and others.

 

Behind the Words

Just as in verse twelve, Paul starts off this verse with ara oun, which means “so in conclusion.”

Some translations start this verse out with “Let us pursue.” This is translated from diōkō, which means “to pursue” in a good sense and “to persecute” in a bad sense. It means “to constantly go after something.” The presence of “let” in the English makes it sound like a command (imperative mood) but it is expressed in the subjunctive mood. So it is more accurately translated “Therefore we should pursue …”

The word translated “build up” is oikodomē, which refers to “the process of building something.”

 

Meaning Explained

Since his previous conclusion (verses fourteen and fifteen), Paul has told us, “If you insist on having your own way, you may cause your brother to stumble, you will not be walking according to love, what you consider good will be spoken evil of, you will not be pursuing God’s glory, and you will not please God or man.” “In conclusion,” he says, “instead of all that, we should pursue the things that produce peace and that build-up one another.”

What Paul has had to say to us in these past five verses seems a bit harsh, especially when you consider that we all have times when our sin nature takes over and controls our thoughts and actions. But even the best of Christians has these spiritual ups and downs. I was reminded recently about the Apostle Peter’s interactions with Jesus in Matthew chapter sixteen. When Jesus asks the disciples who people say He is, they respond with, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." (Matthew 16:14)

But when He asks the disciples who they say He is, Peter is quick to reply, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." In response, Jesus proclaims Peter to be blessed.

A short time later, Jesus begins to explain to his disciples that He must suffer many things, be killed, and be raised from the dead. Upon hearing this, Peter takes the Lord aside and begins to rebuke Him. (I’m sure none of us has ever yelled at God, have we?) J At this point our Lord says to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are an offense to me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men." (Matthew 16:23)

Imagine having the Son of God say that you are an offense to Him! Then Jesus says to them all, "If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24)

That’s precisely what Paul has been teaching us in this passage of Scripture. We need to deny self and treat other Christians and our Lord as more important than we are.

 

Application

Once again, we see that a close walk with our God is largely a matter of where our focus it. If we are focused on ourselves and seeking to satisfy our own desires, we will stray from God because we aren’t watching where we’re going. But if our focus is on Him, then we will be following in His footsteps, and serving God and fellow Christians becomes our constant objective. Is it time for another focus check?

Romans 12:14 – Blessing, Not Cursing

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not wish them evil.

Being Christ-like is really, really hard – but not impossible.

 

Behind the Words

The word translated “bless” is eulogeō, which is a compound word made up of eu, meaning “good or well” and a form of the noun logos, meaning “a word,” or the thoughts behind the word. So Paul is telling us that we should have good thoughts and say good things about those who persecute us. One more thing about the word translated “bless” is the fact that it is expressed in the imperative mood, which means that this is a command that Paul is giving us, not simply a suggestion.

“Persecute” is translated from a form of the Greek word diōkō, which is the same root as the word in the previous verse which was translated as “pursuing.” There we saw that this word means “to pursue” or “to persecute.” In other words, it means to be continually going after something, whether for good or for evil.

The Greek word translated “wish them evil” is kataraomai. This is the verb form of katara. This is made up of kata, meaning “down,” but often used as an intensifier, and ara. This word, ara, originally referred to “a prayer,” but over time it came to mean an imprecatory prayer or a wish for evil. In other words, it refers to a curse, or wish for a deity to execute upon someone. So we see that kataraomai refers to a prayer in which we ask God to take vengeance for us.

 

Meaning Explained

Now Paul gets down to a really difficult aspect of how Christians should act. He says that we should bless those who persecute us. The use of the word translated “persecute” may be a bit of a play on words by the Apostle Paul. We should be constantly pursuing opportunities to be hospitable to others (verse thirteen), and we should speak well of those who constantly pursue opportunities to do evil to us (verse fourteen).

Most Christians have experienced the pain of having someone make life difficult for them. It may have been because of something we have done, or it may have been completely unjustified. In either case, our natural reaction is to speak evil of them and maybe even pray that God would punish them for what they are doing. However, Paul tells us that instead of wishing revenge through imprecatory prayers, we should speak well of the one or ones persecuting us.

Is this easy? Absolutely not! Our fallen nature wants us to get revenge on those who continually try to do evil to us, but the Holy Spirit wants us to be Christ-like. As Jesus was lying on top of the cross having nails driven into His hands so that He could be tortured in a most painful manner, He said,

"Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." (Luke 23:34)

If ever there was a person who would have been justified in asking God to take vengeance on those who are mistreating Him, it was Jesus. Instead of that, however, He prayed that they would be forgiven.

 

Application

Is there someone right now who is making your life difficult, someone who is persecuting you? If so, ask God to make this verse real to you and ask Him to empower you through the Holy Spirit to speak well of (and to) the person responsible for your pain.

Romans 12:13 – Pursuit of Generosity

distributing to the needs of the saints, pursuing hospitality.

Selfless sharing is a sure sign of a committed Christian.

 

Behind the Words

The Greek word translated “distributing” is koinonointes, which is derived from the word koinonia, meaning “to have things in common” or “to share things with others.” Thus we see that the command is not to distribute to the less fortunate what the more fortunate have donated. Paul is telling us to give of our own possessions to meet the needs of others.

The word “needs” is from chreia, a form of chreos, meaning “a debt.” In the current usage, chreia refers to “that which someone is lacking or has need of.”

“Saints” is a translation of the Greek word hagios, meaning “something that inspires awe.” It is the word which is often translated as “holy” particularly in reference to the holiness of God. It also carries with it the notion of being “set apart.” Specifically, it refers to something that is set apart from common use and set apart to be used for God.

The word “pursuing” is from diōkō, meaning “to pursue” or “to persecute.”

 

Meaning Explained

Continuing on with Paul’s description of how Christians ought to live their lives, he says that we should be, “distributing to the needs of the saints.” Let us first address the term “saints.” It does not refer to someone who has been canonized by the Roman Catholic Church even though they are referred to by the Church as “saints;” instead, it refers to those who have been set apart by God, those who have been saved by God’s grace. Hence, all Christians are saints.

What we are told here is that we should willingly share what we have with fellow Christians who are in need. Even those of us who think we don’t have very much can share some of what we have with other Christians who have even less.

Paul also tells us that we should be pursuing hospitality, not just being willing to be hospitable, but actively pursuing such opportunities. This was a necessary virtue in the first century, when houses of public accommodation were scarce. It is not so much a necessity today in our society, which may be one reason why we have become more isolated from each other rather than more closely engaged with one another. One never knows who a stranger really is, for in the book of Hebrews we are told,

Do not neglect to be hospitable to strangers, for by so doing some have unknowingly entertained angels. (Hebrews 13:2)

Also, in Matthew’s gospel Jesus taught:

The one receiving you receives Me, and the one receiving Me receives Him who sent Me. (Matthew 10:40)

If we are truly in God’s family then we should show all kindness in sharing with our brothers and sisters in the Lord!

 

Application

I have known some Christians who are constantly looking for opportunities to share what they have to meet the needs of others. These people are usually smiling. I have also seen Christians who hoard what they possess and seldom give to those in need. These people don’t seem to smile very often.

Romans 9:31 – Faith, not Obedience

but Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not attain to a law of righteousness.

God does not reward obedience, he rewards faith.

 

Behind the Words

The word “pursuing” is diōkō, the same root word as was translated pursue in the previous verse.

“Attain” is phthano, which we talked about in the previous verse. It means “to come suddenly upon something” or “to arrive at a goal.”

 

Meaning Explained

In the previous verse Paul made the point that the Gentiles who do not vigorously pursue righteousness have, nonetheless, seized upon it with eagerness. He now tells us that the Israelites did vigorously pursue righteousness but they have not arrived at the goal.

So, why couldn’t the Israelites reach the goal (righteousness) they were working so hard to obtain and why did the Gentiles seize the righteousness which they weren’t pursuing? The difference is works verses faith. The Israelites tried to please God and obtain His righteousness by doing works of obedience. They tried to work their way to righteousness. However, God does not reward obedience, He rewards faith. Let me say that again, God does not reward obedience, He rewards faith.

Let’s look at an example from the Old Testament. After God led the Israelites through the wilderness and gave them the Law through Moses’ leadership, he led them into the Promised Land where they began to eliminate all the inhabitants of the land. Under Joshua’s leadership they were successful at driving the people out of the land. After Joshua’s death, however, the new generation failed to drive the remainder of the people out of the land.

On the surface, this looks like a failure of obedience. After all, God told them to do it, but they didn’t. However, if we look at it closely we will see that it was not a lack of obedience, it was a lack of faith. Here’s how it is expressed in the book of Judges:

Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served the Baals; and they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; and they pursued other gods, the gods of the people who were all around them, and they bowed down to them; and they provoked the LORD to anger. (Judges 2:11,12)

God considered His relationship with the Israelites like a marriage relationship just as He considers the relationship between the church and Christ a marriage relationship. But the Israelites were unfaithful to their husband-God. God’s anger against the Israelites was because of unfaithfulness, not disobedience. That’s the point that Paul is making in today’s verse. Righteousness is not obtained by works, but by faith. Likewise, God’s favor is not obtained by obedience, but by faith.

 

Application

Are you still trying to please God by your good works? Or do you perform your good works out of gratitude because you believe God’s promise of salvation through the blood of Christ. Let me say it one last time, God does not reward obedience, He rewards faith!

Romans 9:30 – Not Attained by Pursuing

What shall we say then? That Gentiles, not pursuing righteousness, have taken on a righteousness, even the righteousness of faith;

Righteousness comes as a result of faith, not works.

 

Behind the Words

“Pursuing” is from the Greek verb diōkō, meaning “to actively and intentionally go after something.”

The Greek word translated “have taken on” is katelaben, which is made up of kata, used as an intensifier and a form of lambanō, meaning “to take.” So in its root form this word means “to take aggressively” or “to seize with eagerness.” There is another Greek word that is translated “take on.” It is phthanō, meaning “to come suddenly upon something” or “to arrive at a goal.” Thus, we see that Paul is referring to the Gentiles having taken possession of a prize rather than having reached a goal that they were pursuing.

The word “righteousness” is from dikaiosune, which is derived from the noun dikaios meaning “one who does what is right or just.” The ending sune, makes it an abstraction, so it refers to “the character or quality of being righteous or of having obtained righteousness.”

“Of” is from the Greek word ek, meaning “out of” or “as the result of.” The righteousness that is recorded in God’s book is not the result of any action on our part. It is the result of faith, believing God’s promise to us.

 

Meaning Explained

“What shall we say then?” With this rhetorical question, Paul begins his summation of this entire chapter. Even though he spent a great deal of time and energy making the case for God’s sovereign choosing (election), that has only been a supporting point of his argument. The main point is that the Gentiles have received the prize of justification (righteousness) without constantly pursuing after it, and the Jews, who constantly pursued righteousness, have not received it.

You see, the Jews had vigorously pursued righteousness by seeking rigorous adherence to the Law, but they did not obtain it. They believed they had to do something. They believed so strongly that righteousness came by obedience that they consumed their entire lives in being obedient to God’s commandments. The Gentiles, on the other hand, did not pursue righteousness but have now been declared righteous by God through faith. They did not pursue righteousness by doing works or by following all the rules; they simply believed the gospel message. Those who believe that Jesus is the Christ and that He died on the cross to pay for their sins are declared as righteous in God’s record book and only they will be permitted in God’s presence without condemnation.

 

Application

When God chooses those who will be saved, He does not give them a magic formula of things to say or do. He gives them faith to believe His promise of salvation through the blood of Jesus Christ. This only serves to strengthen Paul’s argument that God chooses whom He will save and He does so through the gift of faith. (see Ephesians 2:8)

1 Peter 3:11 – In Pursuit of Peace

Let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it.

Peter commands us to turn completely away from evil, doing good instead. He also admonishes us to pursue peace with a vengeance.

 

Behind the Words

The words “turn away” are from ekklinō, which is made up of ek, meaning “out” and klinō meaning “turn aside” or “turn away.” If Peter had used klinō by itself it would indicate turning away from something but ekklinō implies turning completely out of the way of it. It is a picture of one who is walking down a path and they turn completely off the path.

In the Greek text this is followed by the preposition apo, meaning “from” or “away from.” The repetition serves to emphasize that we are to completely turn off the path of evil and move completely away from it. To add even more emphasis to the statement, Peter uses the imperative mood of ekklinō, implying a command, not a suggestion. Hence, we could translate the first part of this verse as, “He must turn completely away from evil …”

The words translated as “evil” and “good” are kakos and agathos which are polar opposites, the first meaning general badness or worthlessness and the second meaning general goodness.

“Seek” is translated from the Greek word dzēteō, meaning “to look for” or “to try to find.” This verb is also expressed in the imperative mood, indicating a command.

The word translated “pursue” is diōkō, meaning “to pursue” or “to persecute.” It implies much more than simply looking for something. It indicates determination and tenacity. This verb, like the others in this verse, is in the imperative mood.

 

Meaning Explained

In the previous verse we were told,

For the one determined to love life and to see good days, let him stop his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking guile

This verse is a continuation of that thought. If you have determined to love life and to see good days then not only must you be very careful about what you say and how you say it, you must do several other things as well.

Before we get to those things, though, let’s look at the expression, “Let him …” On the surface it appears that Peter is saying, “allow him …” but that is not what he is saying. In fact, in English the use of the word “let,” when used with verbs, is an expression of the imperative, or command, form of the Greek verb. So “Let him …” doesn’t mean “Allow him …”, rather it means “It is imperative for him to …” or “He must …”

If we have determined to love life and to see good days then we must control our language and we must turn completely away from evil. In their place we must do good and, not only seek peace, but pursue it diligently.

 

Application

It’s easy to talk about doing good and it’s easy to talk about peace. The real challenge is to pursue peace and good deeds with the same fervor that we pursue our favorite activities.

See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for one another and for all.

Don’t retaliate when you experience evil. Do good instead.

 

Behind the Words

The word translated “renders” is apodidōmi, which is composed of apo, meaning “from” or “away from” and didōmi, meaning “to give.” Literally, it means “to give from,” that is, to act in response to action done. We also need to provide comfort and encouragement for those who are overcome with fear and doubt. And, we need to support those who are weak physically, emotionally, and spiritually. He also said that we are to do these things with an attitude of patience.

Now he tells us what not to do, and what to do instead. Each one of us at one time or another has been the recipient of malicious action, whether it was intentional or not. The normal response, driven by our sin nature, is to strike back – to get even. After all, the Old Testament teaches “an eye for an eye,” right? But that’s not what the New Testament teaches. Paul says, “Don’t repay evil for evil.” Instead of retaliating for something evil that was done to us, Paul says we need to go after what is good.

Jesus Christ is our perfect example of this. He claimed to be the Son of God (which He truly is), thus claiming to be equal with God. (Matthew 26:63, 64) Because of this, He was condemned to die. He was then ridiculed, beaten, and hung on a cross to die. Even those standing around him said, “If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” (Matthew 27:40) Jesus did not deserve any of this kind of treatment, and He could have simply spoken the words and those mocking Him would have died. Instead, he chose to do what was ultimately the kindest, most loving thing anyone has ever done. He stayed on the cross and gave His life as payment for your sins and mine. He did what was good for all.

 

Application

The next time someone does something evil to you, remember what Jesus did for you. Remember what Paul teaches us: pursue what is good for all. This will glorify God.

Most Christians have experienced the pain of having someone make life difficult for them. It may have been because of something we have done, or it may have been completely unjustified. In either case, our natural reaction is to speak evil of them and maybe even pray that God would punish them for what they are doing. However, Paul tells us that instead of seeking revenge through imprecatory prayers, we should speak well of the one or ones persecuting us.

Is this easy? Absolutely not! Our fallen nature wants us to get revenge on those who continually try to do evil to us, but the Holy Spirit wants us to be Christ-like. As Jesus was lying on top of the cross having nails driven into His hands so that He could be tortured in a most painful manner, He said,

Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do. (Luke 23:34)

If ever there was a person who would have been justified in asking God to take vengeance on those who are mistreating Him, it was Jesus. Instead of that, however, He prayed that they would be forgiven.

Application

Is there someone right now who is making your life difficult, someone who is persecuting you? If so, ask God to make this verse real to you and ask Him to empower you through the Holy Spirit to speak well of (and to) the person responsible for your pain.
