Romans 8:32 – All Things Given

Indeed, He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not also with Him freely give us all things?

Truth to Learn

God has freely given us the payment for our sins and has also freely given us everything we need to be godly people.

 

Behind the Words

The word “spare” is translated from pheidomai, which means “to spare” or “to treat leniently.” God was not lenient toward His Son, but gave Him to suffer for you and me.

“Delivered” is translated from paradidōmi, which is made up of para, meaning “beside, to the side of, or over to” and didōmi, meaning “to give.” Hence, it means “to give over to” or “to surrender to.”

The word translated “freely give” is charidzomai, which means “to willingly bestow an undeserved favor.” This same word is translated “having forgiven you” in Colossians 2:13.

 

Meaning Explained

Paul has just declared, “If God is for us, who is against us?” We know from other passages of Scripture that God is Almighty, that is, All Powerful. No one is more powerful than God (our father is stronger than their father). But, just because He can do anything to protect us and defend us doesn’t mean that He will make our lives one of ease and prosperity. In fact, because He is an all-knowing God, He knows what things will make us most Christ-like. He knows that times of trial and difficulties in our lives will make us stronger. That’s precisely the issue that Paul is addressing in this verse.

God the Father, did not spare His only Son, Jesus. In fact, God the Father, sent His only Son to live a perfect life and then freely offered that life as a substitutionary sacrifice to pay for your sins and mine. He permitted His precious Son to be subjected to one of the most cruel and painful tortures ever invented by the sin-sick minds of man. Then, once our sins were paid for, He then declared us to be righteous and adopted us as His children. That has been His plan since before time began and nothing can alter that plan.

So, Paul’s point in this verse is very simple; if God is willing to offer up His only Son so that He could adopt us as His children as well, He must really love us. And if He loves us this much, surely He will freely give us all that we need, or as Paul put it; “how shall He not also with Him freely give us all things?”

But what does Paul mean by “all things?” The Apostle Peter gives us the answer to that question in his second general epistle to the church:

His divine power has given us everything pertaining to life and godliness through the full knowledge of him who called us through glory and worthiness. (2Peter 1:3)

Thus we see that in addition to giving the life of His Son to pay the penalty that we can’t pay ourselves, God gives us everything we need to live full lives as godly people.

 

Application

Not only is our Father the strongest around, He loves us more than we can comprehend! And, now that you know that you have everything you need to live a godly life, what are you going to do about it?

Romans 4:25 – Resurrection Justification

who was delivered for of our transgressions, and was raised for our justification.

Salvation is only through faith in the sacrificial death and bodily resurrection of Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.

 

Behind the Words

“Delivered” is translated from paradidōmi, which is made up of para, meaning “beside, to the side of, or over to” and didōmi, meaning “to give.” Hence, it means “to give over to” or “to surrender to.”

The word “transgressions” is from paraptōma, which is derived from parapiptō, meaning “to fall by the side” or “to slip-up.”

“Justification” is from the word dikaiōsis, from the verb dikaioō, which means “to justify” or “to declare righteous.”

 

Meaning Explained

Abraham believed that God would raise up a son from the deadness of his own body and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. Abraham also believed that God would raise Isaac again from the dead after he was to offer him as a sacrifice on Mount Moriah (see Genesis 22:1-19). In the same way we are to believe that God raised Jesus from the dead and that he will raise us from the dead unto eternal life. Though it is different subject matter in each case, it is still faith that God responds to with His declaration of righteousness.

We are not to believe in just anything. It’s not just blind faith in “a deity” or simply believing that there is a God. In order for us to be declared righteous by God, we have to believe in what He tells us about ourselves and about Jesus. We are sinners, and we deserve the punishment of Hell for our sins; therefore, we need salvation that we can’t provide for ourselves. The worst part of the punishment of Hell is not the torment of the fire; rather, it is the separation from God, the inability to fellowship with Him, the fact that He has sentenced us to a place of loneliness and emptiness. That’s the real agony Hell induces.

As Paul states in this verse, Jesus was delivered for our transgressions. Jesus took on our transgressions and suffered our punishment for us. We must believe this. While Jesus was hanging on the cross, there was darkness for three hours. Toward the end of this time of darkness, Jesus cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). Why? It was during these three hours that Jesus was separated from God the Father for the only time ever. It was during this time that Jesus suffered the loneliness of Hell for us. It was during this time that He suffered in our place and paid the penalty for our sins!

Paul then states that He was raised for our justification. We are justified because Jesus was raised from the dead by the power of God. This is according to His promise just as Isaac was raised from the deadness of Abraham and of Sarah’s womb, and Isaac would have been raised from the dead if Abraham had been allowed to sacrifice him on Mount Moriah. Because we believe in the resurrection of Christ and believe God’s promise that He will raise us up to eternal life, He has imputed righteousness to us and has given us the seal of the Holy Spirit to keep until He fulfills His promise.

 

Application

Paul has been teaching us that eternally secure salvation is by the grace of God through faith and faith alone. Hallelujah!

Ephesians 5:25 – Sacrificial Love

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,

Husbands are to sacrifice for their wives.

 

Behind the Words

The word translated “love” is agapaō, which refers to “good will” or “benevolence,” that is, acts of goodness toward someone else. There is another verb translated “love” in the New Testament. It is phileō, referring to a “brotherly love” or “fondness” as expressed between good friends. It is based on feelings. Agapaō, on the other hand, indicates a love in action, not just feelings or emotion. It implies action which is directed toward the benefit of the beloved, even at the expense of personal sacrifice on the part of the loving one. Therefore, agapaō is often referred to as “a self-sacrificing love.” It is expressed in today’s verse in the imperative mood, indicating a command to husbands, not simply a suggestion.

“Gave up” is translated from paradidōmi, which is made up of para, meaning “to the side of” and didōmi, meaning “to give.” Thus, paradidōmi literally means “to give to the side of.” The picture is that of someone surrendering something to someone else. The word is expressed here in the aorist tense, indicative mood. This implies action that was performed at a point in time in the past (not a continuous action, but a single act). Jesus Christ expressed the purest form of agapē love when He gave Himself up to be crucified in our place.

“Her” is translated from the Greek pronoun autēs, which is singular and feminine. One reason for this is that in Greek the pronoun must agree in number and gender with the noun it refers to, and the Greek word for church (ekklēsia) is a singular, feminine noun. It is also significant, however, that Paul is equating the church with wives, which is also a feminine noun. Some translations use “it” in reference to the church, since the English word church is neuter and requires a neuter pronoun. However, in keeping with good Greek grammar and to preserve the comparison that Paul is making between the church and wives, we have translated it as “her.”

 

Meaning Explained

Having established the order of authority within a marriage relationship and the responsibility of a wife, Paul now talks about the husband’s position in a marriage. Wherever authority is given, there is also responsibility. This is especially true here where the Apostle commands all husbands to love their wives. As we pointed out in Behind the Words, this love that a husband is to have for his wife is not just a feeling, it is action. Men are commanded to be more concerned about the wellbeing of their wives than their own wellbeing. They are to sacrifice themselves for their wives.

In the previous two verses, Paul gave women an example of submission, that of the church’s submission to Christ as the head of the church. He now uses this same relationship between Jesus Christ and His church as an example of how husbands are to love their wives. Jesus Christ loves the church so much that He offered himself on the cross. He literally sacrificed His own life for the good of the church. Men, this is the type of love that we are to demonstrate for our wives. Men, if you are abusing your wife, either physically or emotionally, you are not demonstrating agapē love, you are demonstrating selfishness, which is just the opposite!

It is interesting to note that women are never commanded to love their husbands with an agapē love. In Titus 2:4 we find that older women in the church are to teach younger women to love their husbands. However, the word translated “love” in that verse is not agapaō, but phileō, an affectionate love. Women are not commanded to sacrifice themselves for their husbands, but husbands ARE commanded to sacrifice themselves for their wives.

One of the things that Paul is telling us men is that if we demonstrate true self-sacrificing love for our wives, constantly doing those things which demonstrate care, protection, and goodness for her, she will want to place herself under our authority. Doing so will not be a burden to her, but a joy.

 

Application

Men, the next time you have an argument with your wife, remember that God commands you to sacrifice your own wellbeing for hers. Therefore, making reconciliation is up to you. Always have her best interests in mind, not your own. Love her like Christ loves us!

Ephesians 5:2 – The Love Offering

And walk in love, as Christ also loved you and gave Himself for you, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.

God gave us a sacrifice of love. We should give Him the same.

 

Behind the Words

Peripateō is the Greek word translated “walk.” It is composed of peri, meaning “around” and pateō, meaning “to walk.” Thus, it literally means “to walk around.” It is used here and elsewhere as a metaphor for how one lives one’s life.

The word translated “gave” is paradidōmi, which is made up of para, meaning “to the side of” or “over to” and didōmi, meaning “to give.” Paradidōmi means “to deliver over to the power of someone else,” as a prisoner is delivered over to the executioner. It is expressed here in the aorist tense indicating a single event having occurred in the past.

“Offering” is from prosphora, which is composed of pros, meaning “to or toward” and a form of pherō, meaning “to bring” or “to bear.” This word refers to something which has been “brought forward to an altar,” that is, an offering.

The word “sacrifice” is translated from thusia, which is derived from the verb thuō, meaning “to kill and offer as a sacrifice.”

“Sweet-smelling” is from euōdia, which is composed of eu, meaning “good or well” and ozō, meaning “to smell.”

“Fragrance” is from the Greek word osmē, which refers to “a smell” or “an odor” of any kind.

 

Meaning Explained

In the previous chapter the Apostle Paul instructed us on how to take off our “old man” and put on the “new man.” Then, he told us to imitate God, since we are His children. Now, he tells us the most fundamental principle for living a successful Christian life, “walk in love.” This fundamental principle is one that permeates the Bible from beginning to end.

When God gave the Law to Moses, He began the process by giving him two tables of stone with the Ten Commandments carved in them. The first four of these commandments indicate how to have a loving relationship with God and the last six indicate how to have a loving relationship with others. Also, when Jesus was asked by one of the Pharisees “which is the great commandment in the law?” this is how He responded.

And Jesus said to him, 'You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." (Matthew 22:37-40)

Notice, however, that God does not ask us to do anything that He has not already done for us. God loved us so much that He provided a way for us sinners to have all our sins forgiven. He sacrificed His only begotten son so that we can know Him, fellowship with Him, and spend eternity with Him.

 

Application

Since God was willing to offer the ultimate sacrifice for our sakes, shouldn’t we be willing to sacrifice this life we have for Him. We do that by showing to everyone around us a self-sacrificing love for them. We can do that, but only through the empowering of His Holy Spirit. Are you willing to try?

Ephesians 4:19 – Numb, Uncontrolled, and Unclean

who, being past feeling, have surrendered themselves to lewdness, to the working of all uncleanness with greediness.

The unsaved are in a hopeless state. Offer them hope!

 

Behind the Words

The words “being past feeling” are from the Greek verb apalgeō, which is made up of apo, meaning “from” or “away from” and algeō, meaning “to feel pain.” Apalgeō means “unable to feel pain” or “to be numb.” It is expressed here in the perfect tense, indicating “having lost feeling at some point in the past so that they are now unable to feel.” Based on the context, this is not referring to physical feeling, but emotional or spiritual feeling.

“Have surrendered" is from the verb paradidōmi, which is made up of para, meaning “to the side of” and didōmi, meaning “to give.” It is a picture of surrendering self or possessions to someone of greater power.

Meaning Explained

Two verses back Paul told us not to walk as other Gentiles (unsaved) who spend their lives living by their intellect instead of their spirit. He went on to say that because of sin these unbelievers have a heart that is hardened and they are unable to acknowledge or understand the salvation that God offers. As a result, they do not participate in the spiritual life (eternal life) that God offers to them.

Now he tells us a bit more about the unsaved mind. These people, he says, are unable to feel. This may be a reference to their inability to feel hope. They are like the Israelites described by the prophet Jeremiah:

And they said, "That is hopeless! So we will walk according to our own plans, and we will every one obey the dictates of his evil heart." (Jeremiah 18:12)

As a result of their hopelessness they have stopped even trying to control their physical desires. Instead, they give in to their desires and perform all kinds of unclean acts, doing so focused only on satisfying their own sinful desires.

Even a cursory look at the world today will tell us that Paul is spot on with this description. Not only do the unsaved behave exactly as he has described, but they are getting more so with each passing day.

 

Application

It would be easy to get discouraged and to develop a feeling of hopelessness when we see all that is going on around us in the world today. However, we are not hopeless. We have a hope and a glorious future because of our faith in Christ. Instead of feeling down, lift your spirits and proclaim the Gospel message of hope and salvation to those around you. And – give God all the glory!
