1 Thessalonians 1:8 – Demonstrating Our Faith

For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith toward God has gone out, so that we have no need to say anything.

Demonstrating our faith in everyday words and actions is the responsibility of every Christian.

 

Behind the Words

“Word” is from the Greek noun logos, which is based on the verb legō, meaning “to lay forth,” that is, “to express a thought in words.” Hence, logos refers to something said. However, it means more than just the word as spoken or written down; it includes the thought behind the word.

Kurios is the Greek word translated “Lord.” It is derived from kuros, meaning “might” or “power.” Thus, kurios refers to “someone who has legal power or supreme authority over you.” When accompanied by the definite article as it is here, it is a reference to “the Lord,” that is to God, who is our Lord and our Master.

The words “has sounded forth” are translated from the Greek verb exēcheomai. This word is made up of ex, meaning “out” or “out of” and ēcheō (from which we get our English word echo), which means “to make a loud noise.” Thus, exēcheomai means “to send out a loud sound.”

“We have no need” is the translation of the word chreia, which is derived from the verb chraomai, meaning “to furnish what is needed.” Chreia refers specifically to employment; however, it is often used as a metaphor for “that which is needed” or “that which is necessary.”

 

Meaning Explained

Back in verse three the Apostle Paul praised the members of the church in Thessalonica for their deeds of faith, their labor of love, and their patience. In verse six he said that they joyfully received the Word of God even in the midst of much affliction. He then said that they were examples to Christians all over the areas of Macedonia and Achaia. The reason they were such great examples to others included more than their labor of love and patience.

According to today’s verse, the Christians in Thessalonica proclaimed the word of the Lord far and wide. God has gifted each and every Christian with spiritual gifts, God given abilities, to be used within the church. He lists a number of these gifts in Ephesians 4:11 and 1Corinthians 12:8-10. But Jesus gave us all a commission to preach the gospel, baptize believers, and teach those who have been saved (Mark 28:19, 20). Just because you don’t have the gift of evangelism doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be proclaiming the gospel. And just because you don’t have the gift of helps doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be helping others within the church.

The members of the church in Thessalonica were so bold in proclaiming the gospel and they were so willing to put their faith into practice that they had a reputation throughout the Roman world of their day. In fact, their reputation was so great that Paul didn’t have to tell anyone, they already knew.

 

Application

As we asked yesterday, are you a “supposed Christian” or a “committed Christian?” Do your words and actions announce to everyone around you that you are a disciple of Christ? If not, why not?

Ephesians 6:24 – Eternal Joy

Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen.

God’s grace and His love are unfading and eternal.

 

Behind the Words

“Grace” is translated from the Greek word charis. This is from the verb chairō, meaning “to rejoice.” It specifically refers to “an undeserved act of kindness causing joy or gratification, which is done without expectation of anything in return.” Here it is a specific reference to the joy that comes from knowing that God has granted salvation to those who don’t deserve it.

The word translated “Lord” is kurios, which is derived from kuros, meaning “might” or “power.” Thus, kurios refers to “someone who has legal power or supreme authority over you.”

“Sincerity” is from aphtharsia, which is derived from aphthartos, meaning “incorruptible” or “imperishable.” When used as it is here it refers to the way in which we love our Lord. In other words, it refers to a love that does not fade away or decrease, an incorruptible love.

The word “Amen” is transliterated from the Hebrew word amen, meaning “to be firm, steady, trustworthy, certainly, or completely true.” When used at the end of a statement or prayer, as it is here, it means “this is certainly the truth.”

Some translations end this verse with “amen,” but that word is not in the better Greek texts.

 

Meaning Explained

As we mentioned in yesterday’s verse, Paul is concluding this letter with a benediction, good words expressing his desire for those who read this letter. It is declared here as an implied prayer. In the previous verse he expressed his desire for all Christians to know the peace of God, which is beyond all understanding (Philippians 4:7), the love of God demonstrated by the gift of His only begotten Son (John 3:16), and saving and sanctifying faith which gets us through even the most difficult times (Ephesians 6:16).

In today’s verse he adds to these a joyous heart. Many of us have been taught in the past that “grace” means “unmerited favor.” In a sense that is true when it is referring to the gracious act that God has done for us. However, in its root meaning it really refers to the joy which is produced in our hearts as a result of God’s unmerited favor to us. We are all sinners and the penalty for our sins is death (separation from God for all eternity). For anyone who has accepted God’s gift of salvation, however, there is unspeakable joy in knowing that our sins have been forgiven. That joy can never be taken away from us, even in the face of physical death because we have a joyous hope of being in God’s presence forever.

Finally, in closing this letter Paul tells us something about the love that we Christians have for our God. This love, like our joy, not only will not cease, it will never diminish or fade. 

 

Application

No matter what kind of difficulty you may go through, if you are a Christian you can rest on the fact that God loves you as if you were His only child, and He has forgiven you all your sins. Paul teaches elsewhere that you can never do anything to lose that salvation because you didn’t do anything to earn it; it is God’s gracious gift. Therefore, you will never be separated from God or from His love. You may suffer heartache or pain, but you will know eternal peace and joy because of His love.

Ephesians 6:7 – Give Your Best!

serving with goodwill, as to the Lord, and not to men,

God gave us His best, so we should give Him our best.

 

Behind the Words

“serving” is translated from the Greek verb douleuō, which is derived from doulos (a bond servant or slave). Douleuō means “to be subject to and perform service for a master.” The verb is expressed here as a participle in the present tense, indicating continual action in the present.

The word “with” is from the Greek preposition meta, which indicates accompaniment. It is different than the Greek preposition sun, which implies “union with” or “integrated with.” Meta means “in the midst of, among, or along with.”

Eunoia is the Greek word translated “goodwill.” It is made up of eu, meaning “good” or “well” and a form of nous, referring to “the mind and its thoughts or feelings.” Therefore, we see that eunoia literally means “good thoughts” or “good feelings.” In the New Testament, eunoia refers to the actions which result from good thoughts; that is, benevolence or goodwill.

 “Lord” is from kurios. We saw in verse five that this refers to “a person who is in a position of authority over you.” When accompanied by the definite article as it is here, it is a reference to “the Lord,” that is to God, who is our Lord and our Master.

 

Meaning Explained

Paul is in the middle of teaching us how we are to behave at work. Nearly all of us have a boss, and even those of us who work for ourselves recognize that our customers are like a boss. A fortunate few of us have a boss whom we really like, but many of us have a boss that we don’t like or that is difficult to work for.

Paul makes no distinction between good and bad bosses, and Peter, in 1Peter 2:18, says we are to be submissive no matter what kind of boss he or she is. In yesterday’s verse we were instructed regarding how not to do our jobs. We are not to perform our work just to give the appearance that we are doing well, and we are not to do our job just to please someone (like our boss).

On the surface this seems a bit contradictory; if we aren’t selfishly doing our job just for appearance sake and we aren’t doing our job just to please our boss or someone else, then who are we doing it for? Today’s verse gives us the answer. We are to perform our job as if we were working directly for our Lord God.

In Exodus 35:35, Daniel 1:17, and Daniel 9:22, we see that God is the one who bestows abilities on us. Couple this with James 1:17 and we see that any gift, talent, or ability we have is a gift from God. Therefore, we should use the talents He has given us to the best of our ability as before Him and unto Him. And, Paul specifically tells us here that we are to do our jobs with good thoughts and with a servant’s heart.

 

Application

As God’s children we are also God’s servants (bond slaves). We have been bought with the blood of Christ; He has purchased us and given us specific gifts and abilities. For these reasons, and in gratitude for all that He has done for us, we should perform whatever task we undertake as if we were doing it directly for Him. We need to give Him the best we have. After all, He gave His best for us, didn’t He?

Ephesians 5:10 – Just Do It!

discovering what is pleasing to the Lord.

We please God by doing, not just knowing.

 

Behind the Words

“Discovering” is from the Greek word dokimadzō. The basic meaning of this word is “to test something to determine its worth.” It is the word used of testing a precious metal like gold by subjecting it to extreme heat. This process burns off the dross, leaving only the pure metal which can then be weighed to determine its value. It is used here as a participle indicating ongoing action (not just a one-time event). In a metaphorical sense, this word indicates the process of discovering the true content of something by the process of testing it. This seems to be the sense of what Paul is teaching us.

The word “pleasing” is translated from the Greek noun euarestos, which is made up of eu, meaning “good” or “well” and areskō, meaning “to please.” Therefore, euarestos refers to something that is “well pleasing” or “very pleasing.”

“Lord” is translated from kurios, which is based on the word kuros, meaning “supremacy.” Thus, kurios refers to someone who has supreme authority over someone else.

 

Meaning Explained

In order to fully understand the meaning of today’s verse we have to read it along with verse eight, omitting verse nine, which is a parenthetical clause. Thus, we have:

For you were once darkness, but now are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light …  discovering what is pleasing to the Lord. (Ephesians 5:8, 10)

From this we see that the purpose of us walking as children of light is that we might be continually proving (or discovering) what pleases God. The use of the Greek word dokimadzō here is unusual. However, it is used in a similar manner in Romans 12:2 which reads:

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

The word in Romans 12:2 translated “prove” is dokimadzō. The sense of this word in both today’s verse and Romans 12:2 seems to be that of discovering by experience. By walking as children of light (displaying goodness, righteousness, and truth), we learn what it is that pleases God.

There is a very important principle here that we must not miss. The blessings of a close fellowship with God cannot be experienced by gaining a head-knowledge about what He wants from us. We must put into practice what we learn. Yes, it’s important to study the Bible, but in order to please God we have to live what we learn! Only then can we truly discover what pleases Him. I think that’s what James was getting at when he said:

Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. (James 2:18b)

 

Application

In order to receive all the blessings from God that you possibly can, you have to be a blessing to Him? Not only do you have to learn how He wants you to live, you have to put it into practice.

Ephesians 4:5 – More Oneness

There are several aspects of oneness in the church.

 

Behind the Words

“Lord” is translated from the Greek noun kurios. This word is derived from kuros, meaning “authority” or “supremacy.” The basic meaning of kurios is “owner, master, or lord.” It refers to the person who has absolute ownership rights or full and final authority over another. It is also used as a sign of respect very much like our English “sir” or “mister.”

The word “faith” is translated from pistis. It is derived from the verb peithō, meaning “to win over, to persuade, or to convince.” Pistis refers to a firmly held conviction. Subjectively it refers to belief or faith in something. Objectively it refers to that which is believed.

“Baptism” is not a translation but a transliteration (a word of one language spelled with the letters of another language) from the Greek word baptisma. This Greek word is based on the verb baptō, meaning “to dip, to dunk, or to place into.” The ma ending indicates the result of the action.

 

Meaning Explained

The Apostle Paul has been challenging us to work hard at promoting unity within the church. He is now giving us a number of examples of the existence of the unity which characterize the church. Previously, he said there is only one body of Christ, there is only one Holy Spirit empowering the church, and there is a single hope (eternal bliss in God’s presence) that all Christians expect at the end of this life.

Now he gives us three more unifying characteristics of the church. The first of these is that we all have the same Lord. All members of the church have the same owner and supreme authority governing their lives. And there is only one God. When asked by one of the scribes what the first commandment is, Jesus responded:

… "The first of all the commandments is: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is one.  (Mark 12:29)

Since we all have the same master, and He is not divided, but one, we are all members of the same household.

The second thing we are told here is that there is only one faith. Not only did we all have to exercise the same faith in order to be saved, we all have the same object of our faith, the sacrificial death of Jesus as payment for our sins.

The third thing mentioned in today’s verse is one baptism. The baptism referred to here could be the water baptism that we submitted ourselves to as a testimony of our saving faith in Jesus Christ. However, it is more likely that Paul is referring to the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This is not referring to the supernatural enabling with special gifts, for that is not the meaning of the word “baptism.” Paul explains this Holy Spirit baptism to the Corinthians this way:

For also we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body… (1 Corinthians 12:13a)

At the moment we believed, each one of us was “placed into” (baptized into) the body of Christ by the Holy Spirit. That’s Spirit baptism.

 

Application

Since all Christians have the same owner, have the same saving faith, and were all placed into the same body by the same Holy Spirit, we should all strive for unity of purpose and peace.

Ephesians 1:2 – Grace and Peace

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul prays for God to show His grace to us and grant us peace.

 

Behind the Words

The word translated “Grace” is charis, which is derived from the verb chairō, meaning “to rejoice.” Charis refers to “favor, good will, or kindness, especially that which causes joy and gratification.”

“Peace” is translated from eirēnē, which means “peace or tranquility.” It is a state in which there is no perceived threat or cause for worry present.

“Lord” is from the Greek word kurios, which is derived from the noun kuron, meaning “might” or “power.” Thus, kurios refers to the one possessing might or power; that is, it refers to “one who is supreme in authority” or “one’s owner.”

 

Meaning Explained

This verse, which expresses the Apostle Paul’s natural tenderness toward those whom he loves, is sort of like the calm before the storm. Whereas the first two or three verses in this chapter seem like drinking from a peaceful babbling brook, what comes after these verses may seem like trying to drink from a fire hose.

Though part of the salutation of the letter, this verse actually expresses a prayer from the apostle. Since Paul spent three years with the Christians in Ephesus, he developed a close relationship with, and fondness for, them. His first expression of fondness is that he prays for grace for them. Christians often think of grace as “unmerited favor,” which it surely is when used in reference to the grace that God has shown to us in granting us the righteousness of Christ and eternal life through Him. But, since Paul is addressing this letter to Christians who already know the grace of God with regard to salvation, this is a different flavor of grace. This is living grace, the favor and good will from God that brings gratification and joy to the everyday lives of Christians.

In addition to grace, Paul prays for peace to be bestowed on all who read this letter. Throughout the years, from the first century until now, faithful Christians have enjoyed periods of peace as well as periods of persecution. Paul is well aware of the trials and troubles that we will encounter throughout our journey on this earth and expresses this prayer for peace even when we are in the midst of such troubles.

He recognizes and tells us not only the source of grace and peace, but the mediator through whom these are passed on to us. There are three persons in the Godhead, each one of whom is completely God, but there is a hierarchy that the three persons have agreed on. The Father is the first person of the three. The Son (the Lord Jesus Christ) is the second person of the three and is voluntarily submitted to the authority of the Father. And, the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead who is voluntarily submitted to the authority of both the Father and the Son. Paul tells us here that grace and peace are from our Father and from (or through) our Lord Jesus Christ.

 

Application

Do you know the peace of God that surpasses all our understanding (Philippians 4:7)? Are you experiencing His grace in your life? Are you fully submitted to His will? These are the things that Paul looks for and expects from those who know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

James 4:15 – The Lord’s Plan

Instead you ought to be saying, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that."

It is God’s plan for us that is important, not our own plans.

Behind the Words

The expression “Instead you ought to be saying” should be more literally translated as “Instead of your saying.”

“Lord” is translated from kurios, meaning “the one in supreme authority” or “the one who is in control.” The use of this word is an indication of our subservience and of His supremacy.

The word translated “wills” is from the Greek word thelō, meaning “to will.” It is similar to the Greek word boulomai, also translated “to will,” though it carries a sense of volition and purpose. Hence, thelō is often spoken of as “determined will” whereas boulomai is spoken of as “desirous will.” So, James is saying, “If the Lord determines it to be, then we shall live …”

Meaning Explained

This verse is a direct response to verse thirteen, with verse fourteen having been interjected as a parenthetical expression. That is to say, verse fourteen was put in to explain why the saying of verse thirteen was wrong and this verse is an example of what should have been said instead.

In keeping with what James has been telling us about planning, we need to recognize that God is the one in control of our lives, not we ourselves. It is God who determines whether we live or die, and it is God who determines whether we have success or not. Therefore, as we make plans for the future, let us not only consider God’s place in our future, let us base our future plans on Him and Him alone.

Let us beware, however, that we don’t take this verse to be a formula for guaranteeing God’s blessing on our selfish endeavors. Just because we say, “If the Lord wills” in our prayers, doesn’t mean that the Lord wills it. James’ point is that we are God’s subjects, and things will occur according to His plan, not according to our plans. We need to daily humble ourselves before God and seek His direction so that we can be used by Him to fulfill His will.

We have a big, powerful God who has saved us by His grace, has raised us up, and has made us to sit at His right hand (in Christ). Without Him we are but dust (literally). Therefore, don’t be like people of this world system, developing an ever larger image of man and an ever smaller image of God. Instead, we need to continually develop a greater recognition of the power and authority of our God, as well as a growing awareness of our absolute dependence on Him and His grace. This kind of thinking will lead us to peace and contentment!

Application

We all have plans for the future. Some of us make very formal plans that are written down and reviewed regularly. Others of us have very informal plans (we may think of them as hopes or dreams) that are not written down and tend to be more changeable. Whether your plans are written or not, take a few minutes to think about what your plans are. Then, get on your knees and give them over to God, committing to follow His plans, whether they meet your expectations or not. That’s faith!

James 2:1 – Impartial Faith

My brothers, do not have the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality.

Behind the Words

The word translated “Lord” is kurios, which comes from the noun kuros, meaning “might or power.” The word kurios means “one who is supreme in authority or power, a master, or an owner.” When we refer to Jesus Christ as our Lord we are saying that he is our master and our owner, the one who has supreme authority over all that we do.

“Christ” is translated from the Greek word christos. It is really not a translation, but a transliteration, that is, a word which is brought literally from one language to another. Christos comes from the verb chriō, which means “to anoint.” Hence, christos means “the anointed one.” It is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew Mashiach, or Messiah.

The word translated “partiality” is from the Greek word prosōpolēpsia, which is made up of prosōpon, referring to “the face” and a form of lambanō, which means “to take” or “to receive.” This word does not appear in Greek texts earlier than the New Testament but is equivalent to an earlier Hebrew idiom meaning “to lift up the face on a person;” that is, to show favoritism to someone. Hence, in its root meaning, prosōpolēpsia refers to “treating one person in a more favorable way than someone else.”

The words “of glory” are translated from doxēs, which is from the word dokeō, meaning “to think” or “to recognize.” Hence, doxes refers to “thinking of or recognizing a person for what they really are.” That is, giving them the glory or honor they deserve. The words “the Lord” are implied here and have been added to make the sentence smoother.

Meaning Explained

James concluded the first chapter talking about the form of true religion. He picks up the second chapter talking about the practice of true religion. James directs his remarks to his brothers, to those of the Christian faith, and directly addresses the issue of playing favorites.

Most of the early converts to Christianity were brought up in the Jewish faith. As such, they were accustomed to the special recognition demanded by their religious leaders, especially the Pharisees, who were wealthy and powerful both religiously and politically. Within the Christian faith we are to respect a person’s position as Paul teaches:

render, therefore, to all their dues; to whom tribute, the tribute; to whom custom, the custom; to whom fear, the fear; to whom honor, the honor. (Romans 13:7)

But, within the church, we are not to give special attention to anyone simply based on the outward appearance.

Application

Our faith establishes a relationship between ourselves and Almighty God. We have become His children and as such are to treat everyone with equal respect whether they are rich or poor, powerful or weak, male or female, old or young.

James 1:1 – A Slave’s Greeting

James, a slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes in the dispersion: Greetings.

With salvation comes humility, not pride.

Behind the Words

The word translated “slave” is doulos, meaning “one who is in a permanent relation of servitude to another.” This word is often translated as “bondservant.” There are other words in the Greek language for a servant: oiketēs, meaning “a household servant” and misthōtos, meaning “a hired servant.” A doulos, having no legal rights, was of the lowest order in society during the first century.

“Lord” is translated from the Greek word kurios, which means “one who is supreme in authority.” And the word “Christ” is translated from christos, meaning “anointed one.” This is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew word translated Messiah. James is making a very clear statement as to who Jesus is; He is the Supreme One (God) and He is the anointed one of God, a statement of both His deity and His humanity.

The word “dispersion” is translated from the Greek word diaspora, which means “a scattering or dispersion.” This is most likely a reference to the dispersion of the Jewish Christians following the martyrdom of Stephen (Acts chapter 7).

The word “greetings” is from the Greek word chairein which means “to rejoice” or “to be full of cheer.” In the first century this was a common greeting among friends.

Meaning Explained

This is the beginning of an exciting journey with James, one of Jesus’ half-brothers, or perhaps his cousin (see the introductory notes). Notice, however, that he doesn’t claim to be Jesus’ near relation or even one of Jesus’ apostles, rather a slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. Now, that’s humility! He actually had quite a bit to boast about if he had wanted to. In Galatians 2:9, James, Peter, and John, were referred to as the “pillars” of the church. He was called “James the Just” because of his devotion to righteousness, and he was the elder, or bishop, or pastor of the original church in Jerusalem. He had plenty to boast about. Instead, in the opening of his epistle (letter), he introduces himself as simply an indentured slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Now we have to ask ourselves, was this letter written to Jews or to Christians? As you will discover from reading the book of Acts, most early converts to Christianity were Jews who had been brought up to obey what we today refer to as the Old Testament. Because of this, many considered Christianity as simply a sect of Judaism. James 2:1 makes it clear, however, that he is writing specifically to Christians (those who hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ) and not to all Jews:

My brothers, do not have the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality. (James 2:1)

Application

Do you have much to boast about by way of who you are or what you have accomplished? As sinners saved by God’s grace, we should all recognize that we are nothing more than God’s humble slaves. He owns us. He is our Master!

1 Corinthians 1:31 – Where’s Your Focus

that, as it is written, "he who glories, let him glory in the Lord."

The focus of our life needs to be on God, not the things of man.

Behind the Words

The words “it is written” are translated from the Greek verb graphō , which literally means “to grave,” that is, to carve. It is the most ancient form of writing. In first century common usage, it refers to any kind of writing. It is written here in the perfect tense, so it means “it was written in the past and, therefore, it is written (as a confirmed statement of fact).”

The words “glories” and “glory” are both from the verb kauchaomai. A couple of verses back we learned that this word means “to boast, brag, or have pride.”

The word “Lord” is from kurios, which is based on kuros, meaning “might, power, or control.” Kurios refers to someone who has supreme authority or control over someone else.

Meaning Explained

The divisions within the church in Corinth sprang-up primarily from people bragging about who their leader was:

For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe's household, that there are contentions among you. Now I say this, that each of you says, "I am of Paul," or "I am of Apollos," or "I am of Cephas," or "I am of Christ." (1 Corinthians 1:11-12)

This greatly troubled Paul. He was not troubled because some of them claimed to follow someone else rather than him. That would have indicated selfishness on his part. Paul was troubled because it showed that the Corinthians were more focused on things of man than things of God. It also meant that they were following after men of wisdom, power, and eloquence, which is not what Paul wanted nor is it what God wants.

Paul may have seen in the Corinthian Christians what God saw in the Israelites. After all the miracles that God had performed for them and after all the blessings that He bestowed on them, they turned their backs on God and began following after the false gods and idols of the people in the land into which God had led them. They had utterly turned from the one true God and placed more importance on wisdom, power, and riches than in God. As a result, before God judged the Israelites and had them carried off into Babylon, he sent them a warning through the Prophet Jeremiah, who said:

Thus says the LORD: "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight," says the LORD. (Jeremiah 9:23-24)

This is the passage that Paul is quoting to the Corinthians and it is a stern warning to them, and to us.

Application

What is the central object of your life? Is it to gain wealth, power, or wisdom? Or, is your life singularly focused on serving God to demonstrate how grateful you are for all that He has done for you? That’s a question that we all have to answer!
